The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact crossover SUV with seating for up to five people. Though initially used on a line of sports cars, the Eclipse name went dormant for several years before being revived for use on an SUVMitsubishi sells the Eclipse Cross in several countries, including Mexico, Japan, Australia, and the United States. The Japanese automaker skipped the 2021 model year for the Eclipse Cross, opting to refresh the model for 2022.

Mitsubishi offers four trim levels on the Eclipse Cross for 2022: ES, LE, SE, and SEL. Though additional options are slim, two trims are available with upgrades, including the SE Panoramic Roof package and the SEL Touring package. All trims come with the same 4-cylinder engine, and all are available with all-wheel drive (AWD).

Getting In and Getting Comfortable

The updated Eclipse Cross' interior feels more solid and upscale than previous models. Front passengers get supportive bucket seats with good padding and a nice shape. The seats offer a good deal of adjustability, so it's easy for a wide variety of drivers to find a comfortable driving position. Things aren't as rosy for folks in the back, where the bench seat is too flat and lacks enough padding for longer rides. The rear bench is adjustable, which helps, and the back doors open wide for easy entry and exit.

Installing car seats is easy, and the Eclipse Cross earned a top score for its LATCH points, which are easily accessible and located conveniently on both outboard rear seats. Outward visibility is improved for the new model year, as Mitsubishi ditched the weird split rear window from previous models.

Mitsubishi has added a new infotainment system to the Eclipse Cross for 2022. It features an 8-inch display and comes with most trims, starting with the LE; a 7-inch touchscreen is standard for the base trim level. The larger screen is now two inches closer to the driver for better visibility and control. Mitsubishi ditches the confusing touchpad interface from past model years in favor of touchscreen controls. Mitsubishi also adds back a volume knob after omitting the vital physical control in years past. The optional navigation system includes traffic information from TomTom.

The Mitsubishi infotainment interface is simple and mostly straightforward, but it lacks the visual appeal of the industry's top systems, such as Ford's Sync and Stellantis' Uconnect. That said, the touchscreen registers inputs quickly and is plenty responsive. Menus and screens move quickly, and there's never lag or stuttering. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come with a larger screen, standardizing the interface and making for a more familiar experience.

What It's Like to Drive the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Every 2022 Eclipse Cross comes with a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. It produces 152 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and sends it to either the front or all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Those are not sporting numbers, and the Eclipse cross is not a sporty car. The engine and CVT work together smoothly and mostly without drama, and there's less of the abrasive wailing that comes from most CVTs. There's also less noise overall, and the powertrain tends to stay out of the way, even during heavy acceleration. Comfort is the priority here, and on that front, the Mitsubishi is a success.

On the road, the Eclipse Cross is similarly sedate. Ride quality is comfortable and stays that way over a variety of surfaces. The interior is quiet and filters out the most aggressive wind and road noises. That said, there's more body lean and roll in curves than expected. The steering feel is light and makes maneuvering a breeze, and the Eclipse Cross' brake pedal feels firm and confidence-inspiring.

The Eclipse Cross only gets a couple of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) as standard, including forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning. Buyers must step up to the SE trim to access additional features like blind-spot warning. Even then, adaptive cruise control and a more advanced forward-collision mitigation system don't become available until the top SEL trim with the Touring package.

Mitsubishi's ADAS are accurate and mostly predictable—two good things when talking about audible and visual safety warnings. The system produces very few false alarms, alerting once to a large mailbox on the side of the road and having trouble with ultra-foggy conditions at times. The SEL trim with the Touring package gets a small head-up display that folds out of the dash, but it lacks the adjustability that many systems offer. Its size and low orientation on the dash make it hard to see at a glance and not much more helpful than a digital speedometer in the gauge cluster.

How much cargo space does the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross have?

The Eclipse Cross offers 23.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seats upright and 50.1 folded flat. That's a significantly smaller space than what comes with many of Mitsubishi's rivals, including the Mazda CX-5, which offers up to 59.3 cubic feet, and the Honda CR-V, which offers 75.8 cubic feet.

Though it's a bit smaller than most of its competition, the Eclipse Cross' cargo hold is easy to access. The opening is wide, and the hatch opens tall, providing good open space to load and unload gear. There are a few small item cubbies in the back as well, but some may find the vehicle's sloping roof to be a hassle when loading taller items.

Mitsubishi provides decent interior storage space, but the cabin starts to feel cramped with more than a few people stowing gear. The glove box is only handy for paperwork, and the center console storage is too small to be useful for anything larger than a set of keys. The Eclipse Cross' door pockets are reasonably sized up front, but they're not suitable for holding large drinks.

Does the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross get good gas mileage?

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, when equipped with front-wheel drive (FWD), the Eclipse Cross ES returns 26 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. All other FWD trims have ratings of 25/28/26 mpg. The Eclipse Cross ES returns 25 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined with AWD. The EPA rates other AWD trims at 25 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. While the Eclipse Cross could use a hybrid option, those fuel-economy ratings are a bit above average for its class.

If Mitsubishi did move to offer a hybrid in the future, the Eclipse Cross would become much more competitive against models that include the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda CR-V HybridHyundai Tucson HybridToyota RAV4 Hybrid, and others. Those vehicles return excellent fuel economy numbers, such as the Escape Hybrid, which can deliver more than 40 mpg.

Is the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross safe?

Thanks to a few dings in its safety scores, the Eclipse Cross did not earn a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It picked up "Good" scores in most crash-test areas except for the updated side crash test, where it scored "Poor." Headlights were rated "Poor," and the vehicle's seat belt reminder system was rated "Poor." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the Mitsubishi the highest-possible 5 stars overall, including a 4-star front crash rating, a 5-star side crash-test rating, and 4 stars for rollover resistance. Many SUVs score lower in the rollover category because of their height and raised center of gravity.

None of those scores mean that the Eclipse Cross is unsafe, but Mitsubishi could indeed be more generous with standard safety equipment. Rivals like the Honda CR-V come standard with a long list of driver aids—including forward-collision warning and adaptive cruise control—for not a lot more money. Mitsubishi has taken advantage of shared technology and resources thanks to its corporate partnership with Nissan, which brought a full suite of available tech to the Outlander SUV, so there's a relatively straightforward path to include the technology here.

How much is the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?

Mitsubishi's trim lines are straightforward and lack the extensive options lists and add-ons that some American automakers offer. Two upgrades are available for the SE and SEL trims, however. Pricing for the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross starts at (2WD/AWD):

All trims see a $1,295 destination charge tacked to the bottom line. It's worth noting that Mitsubishi has one of the most extensive warranties in the auto business right now, with a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile limited warranty. The automaker also offers five years of roadside assistance with no mileage limits.

The SE trim is the value pick from the Eclipse Cross lineup. It adds a larger infotainment screen and additional comfort features for not a lot more money. It also comes with most of the missing safety gear from lower trims. At the top end of the lineup, the SEL trim crests the $30,000 mark, which is significant. At that price point, Mitsubishi is deep into territory held by heavy hitters like ToyotaHonda, and Mazda, and the Eclipse Cross just can't compete. Its rivals are more luxurious, better equipped, and more refined.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross brings striking style, a comfortable interior, and a decent ride. However, it does not meet the bar set by the best in its segment for equipment and driving experience. It's clear Mitsubishi is moving toward a more upscale attitude with some of its newest models. Still, the effort feels half-hearted here and is not as dramatic a change as it was for the new 2022 Outlander SUV, which takes the Nissan Rogue's solid base and adds a genuinely lavish interior. That said, some aspects of the Eclipse Cross did truly get better with the latest update, especially Mitsubishi's decision to nix the split rear window design, which blocked rear visibility and looked awkward from outside the vehicle.

In terms of value, the Eclipse Cross' rivals do more for about the same amount of money. The Honda CR-V gets more cargo space and safety equipment, the Mazda CX-5 gets an engaging driving experience and a plush interior, and so on. In all of today's cutthroat SUV segments, it's not good enough to just be good enough, which unfortunately is where the Eclipse Cross lands on the spectrum.

To be fair, good enough here is still pretty good. The Eclipse Cross is reasonably robust and does the things it's supposed to do well. It's also adequately equipped and features attractive styling. Those things matter, but the real substance comes from equipment and experience—two areas in which Mitsubishi lags behind its competition.
