Mazda is discontinuing the five-passenger midsize CX-70 crossover SUV for the 2027 model year. But do not worry. The automaker is moving that configuration to the CX-90 lineup, where it will be available with a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine and Premium Sport trim.

The three-row Mazda CX-90 served as the basis for the two-row Mazda CX-70 when the latter model debuted for 2025. It did not make sense to me then, and apparently, it does not make sense to Mazda now. So, after two years, Mazda is pulling the plug on the CX-70, but its two-row seating configuration is now a part of the 2027 Mazda CX-90 lineup.
Mazda offers the new five-passenger 2027 CX-90 only in Premium Sport trim, with the standard and high-output versions of the turbocharged 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine. Prices range from $48,525 to $55,185, including the $1,645 destination charge.
The 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport provides 280 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Sport bumps output to 319 hp and 369 pound-feet (340 hp if you use premium gas). All 2027 CX-90 SUVs get an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.
The former CX-70 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is canceled as the two-row configuration moves to the CX-90 lineup, but the PHEV powertrain remains available for the three-row CX-90 models.
Across the CX-90 lineup, a revised rear suspension promises improved ride comfort, while the CX-90 PHEV’s electric motor adds more insulation material to quiet its operation at lower travel speeds. New paint colors include Navy Blue Mica and Aero Gray Metallic, while Mazda carries over Melting Copper Metallic and Zircon Sand Metallic from the former CX-70 lineup. Deep Crystal Blue Mica is no longer available.

The new two-row 2027 Mazda CX-90 comes only in Premium Sport trim. Based on the CX-90 Preferred, the Premium Sport treatment adds black 21-inch wheels, blacked-out exterior trim, and, for 2027, Alexa Built-in for the infotainment system.
Upgrade to the higher-output engine, and the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus includes Mi-Drive modes (Sport, Off-Road, and Towing) and color-matched wheel arch trim. It also features a panoramic sunroof, premium Nappa leather upholstery, a heated power-adjustable steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger’s seat.
Technology upgrades for the more powerful version of the five-passenger CX-90 include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, native navigation, a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, and a head-up display.

With Mazda integrating the CX-70's two-row seating into the 2027 CX-90 lineup, this crossover SUV competes against an array of midsize SUVs. Alternative five-passenger models include the Honda Passport, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Murano, Subaru Outback, and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.
In the three-row segment, the list of rivals is longer, including the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Kia Telluride, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, and Volkswagen Atlas.
Based on my experience driving most of the Mazda CX-90’s competitors, it is the one to get if you value style, upscale materials, enjoyable on-road driving dynamics, and a proven safety record. No other midsize SUV in this class offers a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, and the CX-90 is also one of the only PHEV models in its segment, the other being the Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid.
