The Nissan Altima is about as ubiquitous as it comes. It’s nearly impossible to drive more than a few miles without seeing at least one, but a watchful eye will usually spot several on a short tour around town. In its sixth generation since 2018, the Altima is available in five trim levels for 2022: S, SV, SR, SL, and Platinum. The hot-selling Altima is on sale now and starts at $25,525 after a $975 destination charge. Pricing tops out with the Platinum trim, which starts at $35,225.
Updates for 2022 are minimal but include a new Midnight Edition package for the mid-range SR trim. When equipped, the package brings LED fog lights, heated front seats, a moonroof, gloss-black exterior trim, unique badging, 19-inch wheels, and side mirror-mounted LED turn signal indicators.
The Altima is one of few cars in its general price range and size with available all-wheel drive. It’s a feature that makes the Nissan a compelling buy for people living in places where the cold air hurts their faces for at least part of the year. The handy feature isn’t available for the base S trim but can be added to the SV trim for just $1,400.
Most 2022 Altimas come with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive as standard. Nissan offers its innovative variable-compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engine, but only in the SR trim. It produces 236 hp and 267 pound-feet but can make up to 248 hp on premium fuel. The engine can change its compression ratio in response to the driver’s right foot. When more power is needed, compression increases, but when fuel economy is a priority, it can reduce its compression for more efficient cruising.
Nissan offers a spread of cabin materials and features for the Altima, depending on the trim. The cars come standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Most trims offer a load of safety gear as standard equipment. Starting with the SV trim, features such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and lane-departure warning are standard.
The 2022 Altima hasn’t been crash-tested yet, but the structurally similar 2021 model earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
