For many, the promise of adventure lies on the path less traveled. Whether you're traversing muddy trails, rocky paths, or snowy landscapes, your vehicle's ability to adapt to changing environments is invaluable for navigating the wilderness. Ford engineered its Terrain Management System (TMS) to meet these challenges head-on.

The Ford Terrain Management System is an innovative drivetrain/traction control feature that enhances the off-road driving experience. The premise of this technology is to help drivers traverse challenging terrain confidently while ensuring optimal performance across various driving conditions and road surfaces.
Available on select Ford SUVs and trucks—Bronco, Bronco Sport, Escape, Expedition, Explorer, F-150, and Ranger—TMS delivers control and stability to the off-road experience but is also an asset for driving on pavement through adverse weather and road conditions. As such, TMS is beneficial for both everyday drivers and weekend warriors.
The Ford TMS allows drivers to select specific modes tailored to different terrains. Primarily aimed at those who enjoy venturing beyond the asphalt, TMS offers these key features:
Ford’s TMS is a straightforward and user-friendly system. Drivers can easily switch between modes using a center console dial. Once selected, the system adjusts driving dynamics, throttle response, and transmission shift points to ensure the vehicle performs optimally for that terrain.
For example, when the driver selects Sand mode, the system modifies throttle response, allowing for more wheel slip to prevent getting bogged down. However, the system minimizes wheel spin in Snow mode, allowing for more control and smoother acceleration on icy surfaces.
To operate the Terrain Management System:
Please note the driver must select the 2-Hi transfer case setting for Normal mode. The other three modes—Grass/Gravel/Snow, Sand, and Mud/Ruts—will work with 4-Hi or 4Lo, but not 2Hi.
Benefits of the Ford TMS include:
The Ford Terrain Management System is a sophisticated tool that empowers drivers to take on diverse terrains confidently by enhancing performance, safety, and the overall driving experience.
