Headlights are one of a car’s most essential safety features, and they have improved dramatically in recent years. For example, an increasing number of new vehicles come with innovative HD (high-definition) matrix headlight technology.

These powerful headlights use thousands of micro-LEDs and mirrors to control and precisely aim light beams. Small computer chips, no bigger than a thumbnail, power them and control the matrices that house them.
This technology makes the headlights up to two times brighter over an area four times larger than traditional LED (light-emitting diode) headlights. It also provides a more flexible and uniform light distribution. As a result, drivers can see better after dark without blinding oncoming motorists.
The four main headlight types available on new and used cars today are halogen, Xenon HID, LED, and HD matrix.
Halogen headlights were introduced in Europe in 1962 and were the standard throughout the rest of the 20th century. These lights use technology similar to incandescent lightbulbs but with a different chemical mixture, including iodine halogen.
Xenon HID (high-intensity discharge) headlights arrived in the 1990s, offering brighter illumination than halogen headlights. They use a glass bulb filled with xenon gas that burns when two electrodes create a spark to ignite it. Xenon HID headlights often have a blue tint to their light.
Today, LED (light-emitting diode) headlights are typically standard on new cars. They are up to 90% more efficient than traditional incandescent lightbulbs and get their power from a small electric current that passes through a computer chip, which then powers the small LED light. These lights are much brighter, produce less heat, and last longer than older headlight designs.

HD matrix headlights build on LED technology by harnessing their power and precisely aiming the light where the car tells it to. Think of these headlights as smart headlights that automate and customize how and where your headlights shine.
HD matrix headlights anticipate the driver’s needs, making driving in the dark simple, safe, and effortless. Using information captured by exterior cameras, the computer chip detects traffic and road conditions and adapts to increase the driver’s vision.
HD matrix headlight features include:

While only a quarter of our driving occurs at night, half of all fatal car accidents happen after the sun goes down. That’s why improved vision from HD matrix headlights is crucial to driver safety. Its adaptive lighting projects precise light beams onto the road and illuminates specific areas, highlighting potentially hazardous road conditions, stopping headlight glare for oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead, and creating a seamless nighttime driving experience.
HD matrix headlights have both economic and environmental benefits. The power saved from using LED technology increases overall fuel efficiency, meaning more time between fuel tank refills. And because LED lights are more durable and have a longer lifespan than halogen and HID headlights, they are relatively low maintenance and don’t need to be replaced as often.
When purchasing a car, be sure to take into account the type of headlights it has. Consider a vehicle with HD matrix headlights for a safer, more seamless nighttime driving experience.
