Luxury PHEVs With the Longest Electric-Only Range

Matt Yantakosol | Apr 15, 2024

EVs may capture the headlines, but Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) have continued to grow in both performance and range. PHEVs satisfy the no-compromise motoring that luxury buyers desire by enabling drivers to operate their vehicles as EVs when charged or as gas-powered hybrid vehicles when the battery is depleted. This article will focus on the luxury PHEVs with the longest electric-only range. Electric-only range is measured as the number of miles that the PHEV can travel on an electric charge alone before the gas-hybrid powertrain kicks in.

Luxury PHEVs With the Longest Electric-Only Range

Land Rover Range Rover SE Plug-in Hybrid – Electric-only range: 51 miles

More known for its off-road prowess and luxury ambiance, the legendary Land Rover Range Rover is not the first vehicle one would expect to top this list with the longest electric-only range of 51 miles. The Range Rover sets the bar high for other PHEVs without sacrificing what makes it a Range Rover. Featuring 4-wheel drive with Terrain Response and 6-selectable off-road driving modes, the added PHEV efficiency does not come at the expense of Land Rover’s revered off-road capability. The collective output of the 3.0-liter turbo 6-cylinder engine and 105-kWh electric motor is 434 hp and 457 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Range Rover can be fully charged at home on 240-volt AC power in 5 hours. When plugged into a 50-kilowatt DC fast charger, the Land Rover can charge up to 80% in 60 minutes. While this is a unique capability for a PHEV, Land Rover recommends using DC fast charging frugally to limit the potential strain on the battery – similar to the recommended protocols with BEVs. The total combined range for gas and electric power for the Range Rover is about 450 miles.

Volvo V60 Recharge Polestar Engineered – Electric-only range: 41 miles

The only wagon on this list is the all-wheel drive Volvo V60 Recharge. For a brand known for its classic wagons, this model’s electrified powertrain catapults wagons into the future while retaining their expected utility. Featuring 455 hp and 523 lb.-ft. of torque, this wagon accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. The EPA estimates the V60 to achieve 74 MPGe combined with 30 MPG city and 33 MPG highway when using the hybrid powertrain. This Volvo has one of the longest electric-only ranges available at 41 miles.

BMW X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid – Electric-only range: 39 miles

The BMW X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid was significantly updated along with the rest of the X5 lineup for 2024. Improvements included more power with the combined horsepower increasing from 389 to 483 and electric-only range increasing from 30 to 39 miles. The 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder gas engine works with an electric motor to deliver a combined 516 lb.-ft. of torque. This plug-in hybrid of BMW’s best-selling model launches from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. While DC fast charging is not an option on the X5, it can achieve a full charge from a level 2 charger and a 240V outlet in 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Lexus RX450h+ – Electric-only range: 39 miles

The Lexus RX was one of the first modern car-based luxury SUVs when it debuted in the late 1990s and was also the first hybrid luxury SUV when the RX 400h was introduced during its second generation. The current iteration of the brand’s best-selling model launched for the 2023 model year, and for 2024, Lexus introduced the RX450h+ which is the line’s first PHEV.

A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is coupled with 3 electric motors including one exclusively focused on propelling the rear wheels for additional traction. The combination yields 304 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

Attaining an all-electric driving range of 37 miles, this all-wheel drive PHEV can also recharge in approximately 2.5 hours on a 240-volt AC outlet. However, DC fast charging is not available with the RX 450h+.

Volvo XC60 Recharge – Electric-only range: 35 miles

The Recharge is the more powerful powertrain option for Volvo’s XC60 lineup. A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged gas engine drives the front wheels while an electric motor with an 18.8-kWh battery drives the rear wheels. Similar to the V60, the combined output is 455 hp and 523 lb.-ft. of torque. The EPA estimates 28 MPG for both city and highway and 63 MPGe combined. This all-wheel drive PHEV reaches 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and attains an electric-only range of 35 miles.

Lexus TX500h+ – Electric-only range: 33 miles

With the 2024 introduction of the TX, Lexus now has a player in the luxury 3-row crossover segment. The flagship trim level is the TX500h+ which stands out as one of the largest vehicles offered as a PHEV and also delivers one of the largest third-row seats of a plug-in hybrid SUV. Given its added cargo and passenger capacity, Lexus equips the TX with a higher output powertrain consisting of 2 additional cylinders and 100 additional horsepower over the smaller RX. The TX is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine and 2 electric motors with a combined output of 404 hp and an electric-only range of 33 miles.

Volvo XC90 Recharge – Electric-only range: 32 miles

As buyers await Volvo’s upcoming all-electric 3-row EX90 SUV, they can still purchase the XC90 Recharge PHEV. The plug-in hybrid option of Volvo’s largest SUV comes with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with the same combined power output as the V60 and XC60 PHEVs (455 hp and 523 lb.-ft. of torque). The added weight of the XC90 only adds a half second to the 0 to 60 mph time of the XC60 (5 seconds) and the all-wheel drive XC90 Recharge has an all-electric range of 32 miles.

Alfa Romeo Tonale – Electric-only range: 32 miles

The Tonale stands out as one of the few vehicles offered exclusively as a PHEV. Sharing components with the Dodge Hornet, the Tonale is Alfa’s smallest SUV and offers standard all-wheel drive. A 1.3-liter 4-cylinder gas engine along with a belt-drive electric starter generator power the front wheels while a rear electric motor propels the rear wheels. The total system generates 285 hp and 350 lb.-ft. of torque enabling the Tonale to make it to 60 mph in 6 seconds. A full battery recharge is expected to take 2.5 hours when using a Level 2 charger and a 240-volt AC power source. The Tonale has an electric-only range of 32 miles.

Summary

Luxury buyers have more options than ever when it comes to powering their vehicles. While many luxury brands have plug-in offerings, these are the ones with the longest electric-only range. If you’re looking for a luxurious overlanding SUV, a sporty wagon, or an upscale family-friendly crossover, there are a number of PHEVs to suit your needs.
