A completely new 5 Series sedan is the most significant change to the 2024 BMW lineup. The revamped midsize sedan includes two battery-electric (EV) variants, two conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) models, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Highlights for the 2024 model year also include substantive tweaks to the i4, i7, and iX EV models. For the new model year, the Munich-based luxury sport automaker increasingly relies on the BMW Curved Display as its interior signature.
After adding the BMW Curved Display to the 2 Series Gran Coupe and 2 Series Coupe in 2023, the sports-oriented car has minimal changes for the 2024 model year. The most notable alteration is a deletion. The illuminated Nizza trim is no longer available. (Much the pity.)
The BMW 3 Series got a mild facelift for 2023 that remodeled its nose, so the changes are less noticeable for the 2024 model year. BMW adds driver and passenger lumbar support as standard on the M340i and M340i xDrive, and they are optional on the 330i and 330e. The sporty M340i and M340i xDrive also get standard wireless device charging. Additionally, BMW makes personal eSIM 5G optional on all versions of the 3 Series for 2024.
Available in Coupe, Gran Coupe, and Convertible variants, the 2024 BMW 4 Series has relatively minor changes. The BMW Curved Display and iDrive 8 are standard on all 4 Series models for the first time. As with the related 3 Series, personal eSIM 5G is optional on all versions for 2024. Additionally, driver and passenger lumbar support and wireless device charging are now standard on the M440i.
The BMW 5 Series midsize luxury sedan is all-new for 2024. In addition to the two i5 battery-electric variants, the lineup offers two ICE-powered versions: the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) 530i and the all-wheel-drive (AWD) 530i xDrive. A 255-horsepower, twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine powers both. A 6-cylinder-powered 540i xDrive will be available late in 2023, and the PHEV 550e is slated to hit showrooms in the spring of 2024.
The new 5 Series is longer, wider, and taller than the version it replaces by substantial margins in each direction. The wheelbase is also longer, and that has benefits in rear-seat room. The interior boasts the digital BMW Curved Display as the heart of the complete interior redesign. A new system called My Modes enables the driver to customize both the interior and the driving experience.
All-new in 2023, the BMW 7 Series full-size luxury sedan gets minor alterations for the 2024 model year. BMW makes heated rear seats standard on the 740i, while the AWD 750e xDrive gets extended Merino leather and a flexible fast charger. Elsewhere, BMW pulls the panoramic "Sky Lounge LED" roof from the 740i and acoustic glass off the options list. However, Integral Active Steering is now available on the 740i xDrive and 750e xDrive.
The BMW 8 Series, which includes Coupe, Gran Coupe, Convertible, and Alpina B8 Gran Coupe, got a facelift for the 2023 model year. The changes also included the addition of a new 12.3-inch center-mounted digital display. For 2024, BMW is standing pat with no standard and optional equipment changes.
BMW introduced the AWD i4 xDrive40 as a late 2023 model, and it continues into 2024 along with the i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40, and i4 M50 xDrive. The i4 xDrive40 offers dual electric motors that produce 396 hp. Estimated range is up to 307 miles on a charge. The entire lineup gets ambient lighting as standard. Heated front seats and wireless charging are now standard on the i4 M50.
For the 2024 model year, the BMW 5 Series sedan features a battery-electric version for the first time. BMW offers it in i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 xDrive variants. The former provides 335 hp and an estimated 295-mile range, while the latter delivers 593 hp and an estimated 256-mile range. BMW says the i5 M60 will scoot from zero-to-60 mph in a tidy 3.7 seconds. The i5's Highway Assistant technology enables hands-free driving up to 85 mph. Drivers can activate its Active Lane Change system by moving their eyes in a specific direction.
Two new battery-electric-powered versions of the i7 sedan join the lineup for the 2024 model year: the 449-hp, RWD i7 eDrive50 and the range-topping 650-hp, AWD, i7 M70 xDrive. The i7 eDrive50 has 19-inch wheels (20-inch optional), ventilated seats, and special heating. The i7 M70 xDrive offers acoustic glass, standard 21-inch wheels, active suspension, panoramic sunroof with LEDs, massaging front and rear seats, and ventilated rear seats.
The BMW iX electric crossover SUV—new for the 2022 model year and with minimal changes for 2023—goes into the 2024 model year with options changes. A convenience package now available on the iX xDrive50 includes active parking assistance, Harman Kardon sound, upgraded digital instrumentation, a head-up display, and a drive recorder. A luxury package now available on the iX xDrive50 and iX M60 features soft-close automatic doors plus glass and wood controls.
BMW completely redid the X1 small crossover utility for 2023. For 2024, the automaker adds the performance-oriented 312-hp X1 M35i. It joins the X1 xDrive28i that came to market in 2022 as a 2023 model. For 2024, the base xDrive28i gets additional tweaking with iDrive 9 now standard. On the exterior, the base model benefits from xLine design beginning with November production.
The sporty BMW X2 crossover utility assumes an all-new form for 2024. Almost 8 inches longer, a tad wider, and 2.5 inches taller, it offers more passenger and cargo room than the outgoing X2. Not yet on sale at this writing, it will be available in xDrive28i trim and the performance-oriented M35i. The base model features a 241-hp, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The M35i variant gets a 312-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder that BMW says will enable it to accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in the 5.2-second range.
Inside, the new X2 features a 10.7-inch digital infotainment display combined with a 10.25-inch digital instrumentation cluster. The 2024 edition will be the first X2 to offer BMW's Driving Assistance Professional semi-autonomous driving system.
The popular BMW X3 crossover utility received a thorough freshening for 2022. After the updates for 2022, BMW is making no changes other than revised exterior paint colors. For the 2024 model year, BMW makes the X3 available in three carryover trim levels: sDrive30i, xDrive30i, and high-performance M40i.
Updated along with its sister ship, the X3, for the 2022 model year, the BMW X4 has no substantive changes other than (you guessed it) revised paint colors.
The X5 midsize utility benefited from substantial updates for the 2024 model year, beginning with its introduction in early 2023. BMW designers revised the exterior appearance with a new illuminated kidney grille, revamped headlights and taillights, and aerodynamic improvements. The redesigned interior uses the BMW Curved Display, incorporating two large digital screens in an integrated unit.
Powertrains are also new. A 375-hp, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology powers the sDrive40i and xDrive40i. A new 523-hp twin-turbo V8 resides under the hood of the hot M60i. For those seeking to be kinder to the planet, the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e gains power and electric-only range.
The BMW X6 crossover coupe is closely related to the X5, and, like the X5, it gets substantial changes for the 2024 model year. The X6 xDrive40i gets the same 375-hp, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology that the X5 xDrive40i has. And, surprise, surprise, BMW equips the X6 M60i with a 523-hp twin-turbo V8. The X6 also receives interior and exterior revisions that mirror those on the 2024 BMW X5.
The BMW X7 crossover utility got a new look for 2023. The new front end with a prominent twin-kidney grille sports split headlights and driving lights that also function as turn signals. The X7 also benefits from new powertrains in the xDrive40i and the Alpina XB7 luxury-performance version. In light of those significant changes a year ago, BMW's only change for 2024 is eliminating the dynamic handling package on the xDrive40i.
The big news regarding the exclusive, high-performance XM crossover is the addition of the XM Label Red. Bringing 738 hp to the asphalt courtesy of its M Hybrid drive system, XM Label Red is the most powerful BMW M road vehicle the marque has ever made. The new horsepower figure represents a 94-hp increase over the standard BMW XM. Overall torque increases by 148 pound-feet to a heady 738 pound-feet.
BMW engineers employed the M xDrive AWD system to get all that potency to the pavement. The XM Red Label's 4.4-liter V8 engine produces 577 hp, while the synchronous motor integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission contributes up to 194 hp. Juice for the electric motor comes from an 18.2-kWh lithium-ion battery integrated into the XM's underbody.
The BMW Z4 roadster, available in sDrive30i and M40i forms, got a styling refresh, added optional equipment, and specified new metallic paint colors for 2023. Having accomplished all that, BMW is taking a breath with no changes for the 2024 model year.
