Tesla sales are booming on the strength of demand for the Model 3 sedan and Model Y compact SUV. Prices are up, and wait times for orders are long, but customers don't seem to mind. The desirability of Teslas is unmatched among electric vehicles (EVs). They're engaging to drive, loaded with the latest technology, and relatively convenient to own, given their generous range and the automaker's ever-expanding Supercharger network of DC fast chargers.
Unlike other manufacturers, Tesla doesn't strictly observe vehicle model years, though the Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) on the cars do change. For the 2022 model year, the company continues to roll out over-the-air updates for its controversially named Full Self-Driving (FSD) Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance, which is part of its Autopilot package of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). In addition, Tesla is now asking owners enrolled in the FSD Beta testing program to allow it to use video recorded both inside and outside the vehicle in the event of a collision or other high-risk incident.
The company has also made significant updates to its mobile app (something you'll use a lot if you own a Tesla). While you're driving, you'll notice that the factory navigation system now includes waypoints, and the Tidal app is a new option for streaming music. Teslas typically have a limited exterior color palette, but Deep Crimson Multicoat, Abyss Blue Multicoat, and Mercury Silver Metallic are in the works. Predictably, the global microchip shortage is affecting Tesla as well. The 2022 Model 3 and Model Y go without passenger-seat lumbar adjustment, and there are reports of missing USB-C ports and inactive wireless phone charging in these models.
Finally, don't wait up for the Tesla Cybertruck. The electric pickup truck won't begin production until late in the 2022 calendar year.
Consumers can order the 2022 Tesla Model 3 sedan in a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) base trim level and dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) Long Range and Performance trims. You might see a slight increase in range on the base and Long Range trims, which Tesla lists at 272 miles and 358 miles (with 18-inch wheels), respectively. The EPA rated those models at 267 and 353 miles for the 2021 model year.
Tesla simplifies the trim levels for the 2022 Model S. This AWD electric luxury sedan now comes in a dual-motor base trim level and the 3-motor Plaid trim level. With 19-inch wheels equipped, the base 2022 Tesla Model S provides a claimed 405 miles of range, matching the EPA's rating for the 2021 Model S Long Range.
The 2022 Tesla Model X midsize luxury crossover SUV comes in two trim levels: a base model with dual motors and a Plaid version with three electric-drive motors and, as on the Model S, the awkward yoke-style steering wheel. Look for a bump in driving range on the base Model X with 20-inch wheels, as Tesla lists it at an estimated 351 miles versus the 2021 model's EPA-rated 341 miles. Technical EPA documents shared on Twitter suggest that Tesla is now using a lighter, more energy-dense battery pack in the Model X, along with a rear, permanent-magnet electric-drive motor in place of the previous induction motor. Like the Model S Plaid, the Tesla Model X Plaid gets an all-new computer similar to the design already used in the Models 3 and Y.
For the 2022 model year, Tesla discontinues the RWD Model Y Standard Range trim level in the United States. The 2022 Tesla Model Y comes in dual-motor, AWD Long Range and Performance trims, both of which have a base MSRP well above $50,000. Look for a slight decrease in range on the 2022 Model Y Long Range, which Tesla lists at 318 miles versus the 2021 model's EPA-rated 326 miles. Tesla will likely start Model Y production at its new factory in Austin, Texas, sometime in 2022. Texas-built Model Ys will have a larger battery-cell design, along with a simplified under-body structure that makes this electric compact SUV easier to mass-produce.
