Changes to the 2022 Rivian Models

Erin Riches-Wong | Nov 05, 2021

Electric-vehicle (EV) startup company Rivian will be first to market with a modern, all-electric pickup truck when deliveries of its R1T start for the 2022 model year. Based in Irvine, California, Rivian has financial backing from Ford Motor Company and Amazon. The company assembles the R1T crew-cab pickup at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois. Rivian also plans to start production of its second model, an SUV called the R1S.

Both Rivian models use skateboard-type platform architecture that houses the suspension, battery pack, and four electric motors—one for each wheel. Software manages the traction at each wheel, so the vehicles don't have a conventional transmission or differentials. An adjustable air suspension and unusually high ground clearance provide impressive off-road capability, and Rivian has also promised big tow ratings.

2022 Rivian R1S Changes

Deliveries of the 2022 Rivian R1S SUV will begin in January 2022, according to the company. The R1S is an all-new midsize SUV that comes in 5- and 7-passenger seating configurations. Its exterior dimensions are on par with a Jeep Grand Cherokee L, but the Rivian R1S will likely offer significantly more cargo space with its space-efficient design. Rivian says the R1S offers a maximum volume of 105 cubic feet. The R1S comes in Explore, Adventure, and Launch Edition trim levels, though the Launch Edition is sold out and no longer available to order. Pricing ranges from $70,000 to $75,500. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the 2022 Rivian R1S's range at 316 miles.

2022 Rivian R1T Changes

An all-new model, the 2022 Rivian R1T is an electric crew-cab pickup truck. Its exterior dimensions split the difference between the largest midsize trucks (think Honda Ridgeline or Jeep Gladiator) and proper full-size trucks like the upcoming Ford F-150 Lightning. And based on published hip room and legroom specs, the R1T is closer to midsize than full-size.

Rivian is offering the 2022 R1T in Explore, Adventure, and Launch Edition trim levels that range in price from $67,500 to $73,000. (The Launch Edition is sold out.) Equipped with the standard 135-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the Rivian R1T is EPA-rated for 314 miles of range. An available Max Pack is a $10,000 option and will provide more range (the EPA rating is pending), and later, Rivian will offer a smaller, lighter battery pack for buyers who don't need as much range. The company says its private Rivian Adventure Network will have over 3,600 Level 3 DC fast chargers by the end of 2023. At the same time, public Rivian Waypoints will provide an additional 10,000 opportunities for Level 2 charging at 240 volts (presumably at hotels since this is typically an overnight proposition for EVs). Rivian has opened a small network of service centers and will offer mobile service vans as well.

As you'd expect, the R1T's cab is loaded with technology, including a 16-inch touchscreen display with a landscape orientation and interior materials with ample vegan and recycled content. The R1T has a relatively short cargo box, but Rivian has maximized its hauling potential by equipping it with a lockable in-bed storage compartment, a handy "gear tunnel" in-between the cab and bed (put your golf clubs here), and a front trunk (frunk).
