Rivian R1T and R1S Get Official Range Ratings
Rivian is one of the most exciting new automakers to come out of the burgeoning electric vehicle revolution. The Rivian R1T pickup truck and Rivian R1S SUV are sleek and shockingly capable. What’s more, unlike so many other new EVs from young companies, they will soon be on their way to market.
But what about driving range? Can these adventure vehicles get you off of the grid, and then back on? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released official range and efficiency estimates for the new Rivian models in preparation for their imminent arrival.
According to the EPA, the Rivian R1T pickup offers 314 miles of range on a full battery charge, and consumes electricity at a rate of 48 kWh per 100 miles. The Rivian R1S SUV supplies 316 miles of range, but is less efficient at 49 kWh/100. Measured by miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe), the R1T gets 70 MPGe in combined driving while the R1S averages 69 MPGe.
MPGe is a measure of efficiency for vehicles that do not use liquid fuels. The EPA generates the rating by determining the amount of electric energy that equals the amount of energy in a gallon of gasoline and the vehicle’s energy consumption over a set distance. The two figures together can be used to calculate MPGe.
These ratings apply to models equipped with the middle-sized battery pack, Rivian plans a smaller and less powerful pack, as well as a larger and more powerful battery for maximum performance.
The 2022 Rivian R1T pickup truck hits the market first in late 2021 and features four electric motors. The most powerful battery and motor setup can provide up to 835 horsepower and the truck can tow up to 11,000 pounds when properly equipped. It will also be brutally quick. Rivian says that the truck can hit 60 mph from a start in around three seconds, which rivals many supercars.
Deliveries of the 2022 Rivian R1S SUV will come later, but the specs and functionality are similar to the R1T. Rivian says it will also deliver blindingly quick acceleration in its most powerful configuation, along with world-beating towing numbers and an upscale interior.
Rivian is one of several automakers impacted by the ongoing microchip shortage. The upstart automaker has delayed the production and release of the R1T more than once, most recently pushing it back to September of 2021. Assuming all goes according to plan, the R1T will be the first electric pickup truck to market, beating the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and GMC Hummer EV.
