Both traffic rules and documentation are standard concerns for drivers. You can’t legally own a vehicle without a car title or run a red light without breaking the law.
However, there are always exceptions to the rules. And if you’ve ever wondered if you could rent a car without a valid license, we’re ready to provide the answer.
Yes, renting a car in the US without a license is possible if some additional requirements are fulfilled. However, a license issued in any other country doesn’t help your case, and car rental companies will not rent the car to you if your US license has expired.
Here are circumstances under which renting a car without a license in the US is possible.
Did you lose your license on the plane or at the airport? Did you drop it someplace by mistake while getting to the rental agency? Well, if you have a valid license on file and you have rented a car from the agency before, they might make an exception for you. In this case, the picture or a copy of the license works too. The agency can verify the license’s authenticity in several ways and allow the customer to rent a car without a license.
Some agencies may allow you to rent a car with a picture of your license on your phone. However, others might require you to provide a copy of the police report claiming the loss or theft of your driver’s license.
Military personnel and their family members are issued a military identification card stating their identity, rank, and other information. You cannot use this card as a substitute for a license. However, you may benefit from certain special privileges if you are traveling for work and show this card at the agency.
Some rental agencies lower the age threshold for military personnel from 21 to 18 years and even waive the young renter’s fee if provided with the necessary supporting documentation. Other than that, agencies may ask for additional documentation to support proof of travel for work or otherwise. A military ID isn’t a substitute for a license, but it’s a great supporting document to show at the agency office.
The following examples detail restrictions that could prohibit you from renting a car even with your license present.
When you travel outside the country, rental agencies may prevent you from renting a car using only your US license. While your state-issued driver’s license is acceptable for driving in Mexico and Canada, other countries may require you to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well. AAA Motor Clubs can help you secure an IDP for about $20. Proof of a valid driver’s license in the United States is required and once activated, the IDP is an authorized ID in 150 countries. Many countries require an IDP for drivers to legally operate a vehicle during their visit. Not abiding by these laws risks substantial fines to the driver. Please note that an IDP is only used as a supplement to your local license, not in place of it.
At one point the rental car industry conventionally required drivers to be at least 25 years of age to rent a vehicle due to this age group’s increased liability. Currently, 21 is a more common minimal rental age, and anything under that usually comes with a daily underage use fee which can easily add $50 to $65 per day to the rental cost. Either way, despite having a valid driver’s license, renters under 25 years old are typically restricted to certain classes of vehicles.
In addition to possessing a valid driver’s license that is not expired, revoked, suspended, surrendered, or canceled, rental car companies such as Avis require drivers to have an “acceptable driving record.” This means the renting driver must not have had a DUI conviction in the last 48 months, three or more accidents in the last 36 months, or a reckless driving conviction in the last 36 months.
Many rental car companies have general policy requirements dictated by the jurisdiction where one is renting the vehicle. For instance, in Florida, Avis states that driver’s licenses from Connecticut and Delaware are only to be used for driving privileges and must not be used for identification.
Technically, it’s possible to rent a car without presenting your license to the agency. However, you still need to prove you have a license and can drive a car. A soft copy of a valid license may be enough to secure a car rental but it’s always a good idea to have your driver’s license on hand. You might be able to rent a car without your license, but you definitely won’t be able to drive without it. Even with a valid license present, you still might not meet the age, driving record, and jurisdiction requirements dictated by the rental car agency to rent the vehicle.
