2020 New York Auto Show Dates Moved to Summer

Dates for the 2020 New York Auto Show have moved due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the exposition rescheduled for August 28 to September 6, 2020. The show was scheduled to run April 10 to April 19, 2020 at the Jacob Javits convention center in Manhattan.

“We are taking this extraordinary step to help protect our attendees, exhibitors and all participants from the coronavirus,” said Mark Schienberg, president of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association, the organization that owns and operates the New York Auto Show, in a statement.

“For 120 years, ‘the show must go on’ has been heavily embedded in our DNA, and while the decision to move the show dates didn’t come easy, our top priority remains with the health and well-being of all those involved in this historic event,” Schienberg added.

The 2020 New York Auto Show date change comes on same day that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a containment area in New Rochelle, a suburb of New York City where coronavirus numbers are increasing “unabated.” Starting March 12, all schools and businesses within a one-mile radius of an epicenter on North Avenue in the Wykagyl neighborhood will be closed for two weeks. The National Guard will clean public spaces and support residents of the region during the shut-down.

Automakers planning major new vehicle reveals at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) include Acura, Cadillac, and Ford, but now those plans will change.

Cadillac had already cancelled the debut of the 2021 Lyriq, its new electric SUV, when NYIAS officials decided to postpone the show. The Lyriq is based on GM’s new electric vehicle architecture, which will also spawn the GMC Hummer electric pickup truck and an electric Buick SUV. The new Cadillac Lyriq also showcases GM’s new Ultium battery technology.

Ford planned to introduce the 2021 Bronco Sport in New York, a crossover SUV based on the same platform as the Ford Escape but with more rugged styling and greater off-roading capabilities. (Note: the Bronco Sport is not the same as the new Ford Bronco, which is larger and engineered to compete with the Jeep Wrangler.) It is possible, especially with the leak of undisguised photos of the Bronco and Bronco Sport, that Ford will simply add the entry-level SUV to a big Bronco reveal event unrelated to the NYIAS. Of course, that event could also face cancellation.

Acura planned to debut a production version of its Type S concept vehicle, which is expected to replace the current TLX in the automaker’s lineup while resurrecting Type S as the performance designation for the brand. Acura may introduce the car during a one-off event or wait for Detroit’s North American International Auto Show dates of June 9-20, 2020.
