BMW's most affordable and smallest car, the 2 Series, is undergoing significant tech and performance enhancements, some of which the German automaker introduced across its model range this summer. The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe—the entry model's four-door coupe configuration—will arrive in 2025 and no longer start under $40,000.
The least expensive 2025 2 Series Gran Coupe—the 228 sDrive—will arrive mid-2025 and start at $40,775. Arriving earlier in the year will be the all-wheel-drive (AWD) 228 xDrive, starting at $42,775, and the performance-oriented M235 xDrive, which has 312 horsepower and a starting price of $50,675. Two M Sport packages are available on the standard models, adding sportier looks. An M Performance package is available on the M235 xDrive, adding upgraded brakes and high-performance tires.
For the new model year, the 2 Series Gran Coupe grows slightly in size while retaining its small footprint. It has large air intakes beneath the redesigned grille, and BMW says an illuminated grille will be available a few months after production starts. On the car's C-pillar, also known as the Hofmeister kink in BMW design speak, is an embossed number "2." The non-M models hide the tailpipes, while the M235 xDrive features four prominently displayed tailpipes.
BMW offers 11 exterior colors and endless other options as part of its customization program. Customers can get a gloss black contrasting roof on some colors as part of the Premium package. In addition, 18- and 19-inch wheels are available with either all-season, summer, or high-performance tires.
Like the other models in BMW's lineup, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe has a long, curved 10.7-inch display across the dashboard and a 10.25-inch gauge display. It runs the latest version of BMW's iDrive infotainment system. The dashboard trim is backlit with ambient lighting, and a new gear selector integrates into the center stack.
The M235 Gran Coupe offers sport seats with Alcantara trim, blue stitching, and an illuminated M logo on the backrest. The display also features M-specific graphics. A premium Harman Kardon sound system is standard on all 2025 2 Series Gran Coupes.
In the 228 sDrive and 228 xDrive Gran Coupe models, the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine uses the more efficient Miller combustion cycle, making 241 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. BMW pairs it with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for smoother shifts, and the automaker claims the xDrive version will reach 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. Select the optional M Sport package for shift paddles behind the steering wheel. Pull the left-hand paddle for one second, and all powertrain and chassis settings adjust to the sportiest modes.
The performance-focused M235 Gran Coupe uses a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 312 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. According to BMW, it can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. With high-performance tires, it can reach a top speed of 155 mph. Additionally, it benefits from enhanced stopping power due to larger brakes. It includes a mechanical differential lock on the front axle.
BMW also says it revised the 2 Series Gran Coupe's suspension, steering, and chassis rigidity for greater comfort and sportier handling dynamics. Adaptive dampers are standard, and the larger brakes with either blue or red calipers are available on the 228 sDrive and 228 xDrive Gran Coupe models.
BMW's Active Driving Assistant suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) is standard on all 2025 2 Series Gran Coupes. It includes safety features like lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot warning. For $500 more, customers can add more ADAS features, such as hands-free driving on select roads up to 40 mph.
For the first time in a 2 Series Gran Coupe, drivers can use their phone or smartwatch to unlock and lock the car. The optional Technology package includes a head-up display and advanced parking-assistance tech. Drivers can also see a 3D live view of their car and its surroundings on their smartphone.
If you're in the market for a luxury compact sedan, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and Audi A3 are more expensive. Still, they provide greater refinement and luxury than budget-friendly options like the Acura Integra. However, the sportier versions of these German sedans—the M235 xDrive and Audi S3—come at a lower price than the Integra Type S, which uniquely features a manual gearbox.
