Though it shares a name with another small Buick crossover SUV—the recently departed Encore—the Encore GX is larger and more sophisticated. It’s also more stylish, and for 2024, the crossover joins the ranks of Buick’s elite Avenir-trimmed models. The automaker is also introducing a sporty Sport Touring (ST) trim level and a new infotainment system for the 2024 model year. Borrowing styling elements from the Buick Wildcat concept, the new Encore GX picks up a sleek style that aligns with the times.

The 2024 Encore GX is available in three trim levels: Preferred, Sport Touring, and Avenir. Buick offers two 3-cylinder engine choices with up to 155 horsepower, which carry over from the previous model year. The new Encore GX will be available on dealers’ lots this spring and for orders starting in May.

Buick borrowed styling elements from its futuristic Wildcat electric vehicle concept for the new Encore GX. The automaker reworked the SUV’s front fascia with a forward-leaning shape and the brand’s new tri-shield logo. Updated LED headlights feature a new daytime running design and an ultra-slim profile. The rear also features the new Buick logo, and the Sport Touring and Avenir trims get LED taillights. The ST trim is available with a black roof package and comes standard with high-gloss black exterior trim.

The Encore GX’s interior updates focus on tech, but there are a few other notable changes. The Avenir and ST trims get logos stitched into the headrests, and the ST brings a flat-bottom steering wheel. The new Avenir trim comes in two exclusive interior color schemes and offers standard leather upholstery. All 2024 Encore GX SUVs get Buick’s excellent noise-canceling system, which the automaker said brings a “serene and premium driving experience.”
Buick offers two 3-cylinder engines for the 2024 Encore GX. The entry-level turbocharged 1.2-liter unit makes 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. A turbocharged 1.3-liter engine is also available that produces 155 hp and 174 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel-drive models come with a continuously variable automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive variants get a 9-speed automatic transmission.
The automaker says both engines come with a turbocharger design that allows them to reach peak torque faster than before. Even so, the Encore GX is unlikely to hasten any pulses, as neither powertrain delivers enough power to get the crossover moving with any real urgency.
Like its predecessor, the 2024 Encore GX comes with the Buick Driver Confidence package. It includes automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, a following distance indicator, forward-collision warning, front pedestrian braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. Buick also offers blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, adaptive cruise control, and a rearview camera mirror as options.
The 2023 Buick Encore GX earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2022 calendar year. However, the Institute had yet to rate the updated 2024 model when this article was published.
The Encore GX received a significant tech update for 2024, including a new 19-inch Virtual Cockpit System. It combines an 11-inch infotainment screen and a configurable 8-inch digital gauge cluster under a single piece of glass and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Buick says the touchscreen is the largest in the Encore GX’s segment and that it oriented the screen toward the driver for the best visibility and ergonomics.
The Buick Encore GX has serious competition, including the Kia Sportage, which offers sharp styling and a generous list of standard features. Buyers may also consider the Hyundai Tucson, which is available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Lexus NX and Volvo XC40 are also contenders, bringing high-end tech and luxurious interior finishes. Though the Encore GX is a little more expensive than it was in prior model years, it stacks up nicely against most rivals. The Kia Sportage is slightly less costly, while the Lexus and Volvo are considerably more expensive.
