A small crossover SUV with more off-roading capability than most, the updated and upgraded 2022 Jeep Compass is one model to consider if you’re planning to drive well off the beaten path.
Jeep offers the refreshed 2022 Compass in Sport, Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited, and Trailhawk trim levels, each equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The Compass Sport and Latitude have standard front-wheel drive (FWD), with all-wheel drive (AWD) an option for $1,500. Other Compass models have standard AWD, but the Trailhawk gets an exclusive Active Drive Low AWD system with hill-descent control and added ground clearance for improved off-roading capability.
As is true of all Jeeps, the 2022 Compass includes the Jeep Wave customer service program as standard equipment, providing three years of scheduled maintenance at no charge, 24-hour roadside assistance, and special access to exclusive Jeep events.
Though it looks familiar, the 2022 Jeep Compass has a restyled front end, new wheel designs measuring up to 19 inches in diameter, slimmer LED headlights, and a newly available hands-free power liftgate. Otherwise, it remains the same as it was in 2021.
A new trim level—Compass Latitude Lux—debuts for 2022. You can spot it by the unique Satin Carbon finish for its 18-inch aluminum wheels. An Altitude appearance package with darkened exterior trim and wheels continues for the Compass Latitude. At the same time, the Limited still offers a High Altitude package with 19-inch wheels and body-color detailing for a custom look.
Jeep characterizes the 2022 Compass’s interior as new, with a restyled instrument panel, revised front and rear air vents, and double the storage capacity. It looks more modern, too, and better aligns the Compass with the redesigned 2022 Grand Cherokee.
The new Compass Latitude Lux adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror to the Latitude trim level. This version of Jeep’s small SUV also has a 7-inch digital driver information system, a larger 10.1-inch infotainment screen, and remote engine starting.
For 2022, the Compass Limited and High Altitude feature soft-touch upper door panel trim and heated rear seats are a new option.
Jeep continues to employ a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine in the 2022 Compass. It makes 177 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque and uses a 6-speed automatic transmission with FWD and a 9-speed automatic with AWD. Maximum towing capacity measures 2,000 pounds with AWD.
According to the automaker, Jeep’s Active Drive AWD features a driveline disconnect function to improve fuel economy. It is available with Sport and Latitude trim levels; standard with Latitude Lux and Limited trim.
The 2022 Jeep Compass Trailhawk has an exclusive Active Drive Low AWD system with a low range and a 20:1 crawl ratio. Trailhawks also have hill-descent control, an additional driving mode called Rock, and an extra inch of suspension lift to supply 8.6 inches of ground clearance, 19 inches of water fording capability, and a 30-degree approach angle. Skid plates, front and rear tow hooks, and 17-inch wheels are standard with the Compass Trailhawk.
Jeep makes numerous advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) standard on the 2022 Compass. They include forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning.
The Compass is available with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and hands-free parking assistance starting with Latitude trim. Later in the 2022 model year, Jeep will add Highway Assist to the Compass’s list of available ADAS. Highway Assist is a hands-on Level 2 semi-autonomous driving technology.
In addition to making more ADAS standard for the 2022 Compass, the big news is the SUV’s Uconnect 5 infotainment system.
This next-generation platform promises significant improvement in responsiveness and equips the Compass with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. A new wireless smartphone charging pad is also available, along with USB-C charging ports that recharge devices up to four times faster.
Additionally, the new 2022 Compass offers an available 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display.
The 2022 Jeep Compass is one of two similarly sized Jeep crossovers. It overlaps with the expressive Jeep Renegade, but the Compass has a more sophisticated look patterned after the larger Grand Cherokee.
Outside of the Jeep lineup, the Compass’s primary competition includes the Ford Bronco Sport and Subaru Crosstrek, the only other small SUVs offering genuinely impressive off-roading capabilities. But suppose you’re not planning to buy a Compass Trailhawk. In that case, the competitive landscape broadens considerably to include models such as the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Nissan Rogue Sport, Toyota Corolla Cross, and Volkswagen Taos.
