According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E and 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge earn Top Safety Pick ratings for their abilities to prevent a collision, protect occupants during a collision, and adequately illuminate the road ahead without blinding oncoming drivers.
The Volvo XC40 Recharge receives the highest rating from the IIHS: Top Safety Pick+. Aside from an Acceptable rating for how easy it is to use its child safety-seat latch anchors, Volvo’s first purely electric vehicle gets Good, Superior, or Advanced ratings in all assessments.
Additionally, the XC40 Recharge’s test results mean the IIHS rates every 2021 Volvo as a Top Safety Pick+. Perhaps this comes as no surprise, given Volvo’s more than six-decade-long leadership role in automotive safety.
“Regardless of body style, engine or trim, every Volvo offers world-leading protection in a crash,” said Anders Gustafsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car USA, in a statement. “We are proud that IIHS has recognized this by awarding a Top Safety Pick Plus to every vehicle we produce today. No other company has been awarded this honor across all carlines in 2021.”
Volvo has made it a mission to prevent deaths and injuries in new Volvos. For example, starting in 2021, all of its models have a top speed of 112 mph.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E receives a Top Safety Pick rating, missing the higher Top Safety Pick+ accolade only because the LED reflector headlights used with Select and California Route 1 trim levels turn in a Marginal performance.
If every version of the Mustang Mach-E came with the LED projector headlights included with Premium, GT, and First Edition trim levels, this Ford would perform even better than the Volvo. That’s because it turns in a Superior rather than Advanced performance for its vehicle-to-pedestrian front-crash prevention technology.
Other electric cars that have earned the Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ ratings for 2021 include the Audi E-tron and E-tron Sportback and the Tesla Model 3.
“It’s fantastic to see more proof that these vehicles are as safe as or safer than gasoline- and diesel-powered cars,” said IIHS President David Harkey in a statement. “We can now say with confidence that making the U.S. fleet more environmentally friendly doesn’t require any compromises in terms of safety.”
