Lexus Unveils The All-New Lexus RZ, Its First-Ever Battery EV

Dustin Hawley | Apr 25, 2022

Lexus unveiled new details this week surrounding the all-new 2023 RZ 450e, the automaker's first global Battery EV. Since the launch of the RX400h in 2005, Lexus has been a trailblazer in electrification within the luxury vehicle market.

“We believe that Lexus, an established luxury automaker, should continue pursuing the creation of exciting cars while respecting nature and the global environment to achieve a carbon-neutral society,” said Takashi Watanabe, Chief Engineer, ‘Lexus Electrified,’ Lexus International. “The RZ has been developed with the aim of creating a uniquely Lexus BEV that feels secure to ride in, is pleasing to the touch, and is exhilarating to drive. DIRECT4, the core technology of ‘Lexus Electrified,’ is an all-wheel-drive system that achieves quick and linear response according to driver input. We will continue to take on the challenge of providing customers with new experiences and a uniquely Lexus BEV driving experience.”

The exterior of the RZ 450e is a direct expression of the dynamic performance that is often associated with today’s BEVs. Its most recognizable feature is the BEV Spindle Body and new front bumper design that focuses on aerodynamic efficiencies. The RZ maintains a balance between optimized proportions and appealing style with Lexus stating that this “styling evolution ushers in a new Lexus aesthetic and establishes a new design direction for BEV offerings.’

Combined with its lightweight and rigid body, the RZ 450e benefits from enhanced performance. The utilization of a BEV-specific platform (e-TNGA) helps in achieving optimal weight distribution through ideal placement of both the battery and motor.

Equipped with the DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system, the RZ 450e adopted a new steering control and available Steer by Wire system that enables vehicle control “more true to the driver’s intention. The RZ 450e will also feature the same Lexus Interface multimedia system that was recently launched on both the Lexus NX and Lexus LX, with features including voice command and a 14-inch touchscreen.

The release of the RZ is a huge step forward for Lexus as it transitions into a BEV-centered brand. The RZ 450e “embodies the unique Lexus vehicle design and driving experience made available through advanced, electrified technology.”

The 2023 RZ 450e is expected to go on sale towards the end of the year. No official pricing has been released to this point, but it is estimated to have a starting MSRP of $50,000, and approximately $55,000 for the RZ 450e F Sport trim.
