Chrysler Pacifica AWD Launch Edition Goes on Sale Before Snow Flies

Christian Wardlaw | Jun 05, 2020

A significantly refreshed 2021 Chrysler Pacifica is coming soon, and it offers an all-wheel-drive system, marking the first time since 2004 that AWD and Chrysler minivan haven’t been mutually exclusive concepts.

However, since winter will be here before it goes on sale, Chrysler is launching the new AWD system in the 2020 Pacifica AWD Launch Edition. That way, the company can get maximum foul-weather traction into the hands of customers right when they need it most.

Chrysler says the Pacifica’s AWD is the “most advanced all-wheel-drive system in its class.” Considering the only other minivan offering AWD is the decade-old Toyota Sienna, it’s an easy claim to make. Will it stick once the redesigned 2021 Sienna arrives with its hybrid-powered electric AWD system? Maybe not.

In any case, the Pacifica’s AWD is fully automatic and can transfer 100% of the engine’s power to the wheels with traction. Then, at each axle, a brake lock differential activates to control power flow to the wheel with the most grip. When AWD is unnecessary, the system disconnects the rear driveshaft to reduce parasitic driveline drag and to improve fuel efficiency.

For the 2020 Pacifica AWD Launch Edition, Chrysler also installs a retuned suspension with a rear sway bar, upgraded brakes, and Michelin Premier self-sealing tires. The minivan also rides more than half an inch higher than a standard Pacifica.

Offered only with Touring L trim, the Pacifica AWD Launch Edition includes the S Appearance Package. As such, it has a Black Noise exterior treatment with 18-inch alloy wheels in a new “Foreshadow” finish, a black interior with premium McKinley leather with light gray stitching, and brushed metal interior accents. An 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system is standard, and though equipped with AWD Chrysler retains the Pacifica’s handy Stow ‘N Go seating.

Options include a navigation system, a Uconnect Theater rear seat entertainment system, a triple-pane panoramic glass roof, KeySense programmable safety features, an Alpine premium sound system, and an Advanced SafetyTec Package. That last upgrade is a genuine bargain, installing a long list of driving assistance technologies for less than $1,000.

Chrysler says the new 2020 Pacifica AWD Launch Edition goes on sale in the third quarter of 2020. The base price is $40,240, not including destination charges, and will be eligible for the company’s Pacifica Family Pricing program including no-interest financing for up to 60 months.
