Toyota is making its rugged midsize pickup truck even more capable. Changes to the 2022 Toyota Tacoma include a new Trail Edition and a substantially upgraded TRD Pro model.

For the 2021 model year, Toyota offered a Tacoma Trail Special Edition. The new 2022 Tacoma Trail Edition takes the concept to the next level with standard 4-wheel drive, a suspension lift, a heritage-style grille, and bronze exterior accents.
The Trail Edition remains based on the Tacoma SR5 and continues to offer the cargo bed storage installed on the 2021 Trail Special Edition. Unlike that truck, the new Trail Edition has standard 4WD with a locking rear differential and comes with a 1.1-inch front and 0.5-inch rear suspension lift.
As a result of the raised suspension, the Tacoma Trail Edition’s approach angle improves to 34 degrees, while the departure angle increases to 23.6 degrees. The breakover angle is greater, too, at 26.4 degrees. Toyota also bolts on the skid plates from the TRD Pro.
Bronze-finish 16-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear all-terrain tires are standard, and you can get the Trail Edition in the popular Lunar Rock paint color formerly reserved for the TRD Pro. Army Green, Midnight Black, and Super White are the other paint color choices.

If the new Trail Edition sounds a lot like the Tacoma TRD Pro, rest assured that Toyota is putting some distance between the SR5-based off-roader and its top-of-the-line boulder basher.
For 2022, the Tacoma TRD Pro gains more than a new Electric Lime Metallic signature paint color. Toyota lifts the suspension 1.5 inches in front and 0.5 inches in back, adds new TRD-tuned Fox internal bypass shocks, and installs new forged aluminum upper control arms to leverage the added rebound stroke accompanying the modifications. As a result of these changes, the approach, departure, and breakover angles increase to 36.4, 24.7, and 26.6 degrees, respectively.
Visual updates include new 16-inch black aluminum wheels wrapped in Goodyear Territory all-terrain tires, revised exterior badges and graphics, and new TRD PRO stampings on each side of the cargo bed. In addition to Electric Lime, the 2022 Tacoma TRD Pro comes in Super White, Midnight Black, and Magnetic Gray paint colors.
Toyota did not announce any further changes to the rest of the 2022 Tacoma lineup. Production of the trucks moves entirely to Mexico for the 2022 model year.
