Jeep introduces a new powertrain choice for the 2021 Gladiator pickup truck. With the turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine, Jeep owners can expect greater low-end grunt and increased fuel economy, although neither official fuel economy ratings nor prices for the EcoDiesel option have been released.
Manufactured in Ferrara, Italy, and available on the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Sport, Overland, and Rubicon models, the EcoDiesel engine offers 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque. Considering that the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, upon which the Gladiator is based, gets about 25 mpg in combined driving with its EcoDiesel engine option (a 5-mpg improvement), we can extrapolate that the Gladiator EcoDiesel will get 23 mpg or 24 mpg.
Aside from its fuel economy benefit, this choice is also good for those who might want more low-end power than the standard 3.6-liter V6 can supply, but if the Wrangler’s specs are any indication, don’t expect extra towing capacity beyond the Gladiator’s existing 7,650-pound capacity. When traversing an unpaved trail, a diesel also has the advantage of more power and torque at lower engine speeds, assisting when you’re slowly crawling over rocks. And for those who appreciate it, nothing sounds as sweet as the clatter of a diesel engine.
The EcoDiesel is matched to an eight-speed automatic, which is specifically calibrated for low-rev shifts for better off-road performance and on-road fuel economy. A 5.1-gallon tank holding diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is placed aft of the fuel tank. Jeep says it needs to be refilled every 10,000 miles, with a specific gauge on the dashboard so you know when it’s time to service the DEF.
You can order the 2021 Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel now and expect to see them in showrooms in the fall.
