Top Speed: The Fastest Production Cars Ever Made

In the world of automotive performance, top speed is vital. The fastest cars to ever hit the market combined mighty engines, slick aerodynamics, and race technology, blasting far past 200 mph, and sometimes beyond 300 mph. They also came with a seven-digit price tag. Let’s take a look at the ten fastest production cars ever made and the top speeds reported by the manufacturers.

World’s Fastest Production Cars

Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut—330 MPH

Koenigsegg is known for its hypercars’ performance, and the Jesko Absolut is the Swedish automaker’s pinnacle vehicle. Powering the Jesko Absolut is a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8, producing 1,280 horsepower on regular fuel, 1,600 horsepower on E85 biofuel, and 1,106 pound-feet of torque. Along with a 9-speed Koenigsegg multi-clutch “Light Speed Transmission” (LST) and rear-wheel-drive, the Jesko Absolut accelerates from 0-60 mph in under 2.5 seconds. To get to the claimed top speed of 330 mph, the Jesko Absolut sports an aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.278. Only 125 Jesko Absolut vehicles were made in 2022, at a starting price of over $3 million each.

Hennessey Venom F5–311 MPH

American company Hennessey Performance Engineering threw their hat in the speed ring with their Venom F5. Named after the powerful F5 category of tornadoes, the Venom F5 is equipped with a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged “Fury” V8, producing 1,817 horsepower and 1,193 pound-feet of torque. With a 7-speed, single-clutch, semi-automatic transmission, 0 to 60 mph is done in under 2.6 seconds. Although it hasn’t been verified, Hennessey claims the Venom F5 will exceed 300 mph to a theoretical top speed of 311 mph. Hennessey sold 24 units of the Venom F5 by 2021, with the final 12 selling for $2.1 million per vehicle.

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+–304.7 MPH

Another automaker known for its hypercars is Bugatti. After battling with Koenigsegg and other automakers to take the crown for speed, Bugatti created the Chiron Super Sport 300+. An 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine produces 1,578 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque. A 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive accelerates the Chiron Super Sport to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds. In standard mode, the top speed is 273 mph, but a special “Top Speed Mode” boosts the speed to 304 mph. With a price tag of almost $4 million, only 30 Chiron Super Sport 300+ vehicles were created in 2023.

Bugatti Bolide–311 MPH

After creating the Chiron Super Sport 300+, Bugatti made a pure track car with the same top-speed intentions. Inspired by the Vision Le Mans concept, the Bugatti Bolide incorporates titanium and carbon fiber to keep the weight down. The Bolide uses the same 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine as the Chiron, now producing 1,824 horsepower and 1,364 pound-feet of torque while running on 110-octane racing fuel. The combination of lighter weight and more power produces a 0-60 mph time of 2.2 seconds and a claimed top speed of over 310 mph. Similar to the Hennessey Venom F5, this top speed number is theoretical. As the more track-focused Bugatti, pricing jumped to $4.7 million and had a limited production run of 40 vehicles.

SSC Tuatara–282.9 MPH

The second American automaker on this list is SSC and their Tuatara. As the successor to the Ultimate Aero, the Tuatara was created to unseat the Bugatti Chiron for the title of fastest vehicle. A 5.9-liter engine powers the Tuatara twin-turbocharged V8, producing 1,750 horsepower on E85 fuel, 1,350 hp on 91-octane, and 1,280 pound-feet of torque. Channeling this power is a 7-speed automated manual transmission, and combined with a curb weight of 2,750 pounds, the Tuatara accelerates from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds. SSC claims a Tuatara hit 331 mph in 2020, but a verified top-speed run resulted in 282.9 mph. One hundred SSC Tuatara vehicles were created in 2020 with an asking price of $1.9 million each.

Koenigsegg Agera RS–277.8 MPH

Before Koenigsegg brought out the Jesko Absolut, their fastest vehicle was the Agera RS. It utilized a similar 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, producing 1,341 horsepower and 1,011 pound-feet of torque. With a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, the Agera RS accelerated from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. Back in 2017, the Agera RS had a verified top speed run of 277.8 mph. Koenigsegg produced 25 units of the Agera RS between 2015 to 2018, at a starting cost of $2.1 million each.

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport–268 MPH

Bugatti's first attempt at creating a world-beating car came in the form of the Veyron. It achieved the highest top speed of any production car, but increased competition pushed Bugatti to develop the Veyron Super Sport. Powering the Veyron Super Sport is an 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine, producing 1,184 horsepower and 1,106 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission blasts the Veyron Super Sport from 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds. Bugatti's goal was to have the fastest car in the world, and in 2010, they had a verified run of around 268 mph. These vehicles had a limited production of just 30 vehicles from 2010 to 2015, and each came with a price tag of $2.4 million.

Rimac Nevera–258 MPH

A single EV makes this list with some truly staggering figures. The Croatian Rimac Nevera electric hypercar comes with four electric motors, producing a combined power output of 1,914 horsepower and 1,740 pound-feet of torque. The Nevera utilizes a 120 kWh battery, and that high power results in a 0-60 mph time of 1.85 seconds, the quickest acceleration of all the vehicles on this list. Rimac verified in 2022 at the Automotive Testing Papenburg (ATP) track in Germany that the Nevera can get up to 258 mph. Rimac sold all 150 Nevera vehicles planned in 2021 for $2.4 million each.

Aston Martin Valkyrie–250 MPH

British manufacturer Aston Martin created the Valkyrie utilizing F1 technology. It boasts a screaming naturally-aspirated V12 developed by Cosworth, with a massive 11,100 RPM redline. This engine produces 1,140 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The Valkyrie tips the scales at under 2,300 pounds and accelerates from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Although not verified, the Valkyrie has a theoretical top speed of 250 mph. In 2017, Aston Martin sold all 150 Valkyrie road-going vehicles and 25 Valkyrie track-only AMR Pro cars. The price of entry for an Aston Martin Valkyrie is at least $3 million.

McLaren Speedtail–250 MPH

Finally, we reach the last vehicle on this list–the McLaren Speedtail. Unlike track vehicles such as the Senna, the Speedtail was created with aerodynamics and a 0.278 Cd. A hybrid 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 produces 1,055 horsepower and 848 pound-feet of torque. With a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and rear-wheel drive, the Speedtail accelerates from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds. When pushed for more acceleration, the Speedtail will hit 250 mph, verified in 2019 at the Kennedy Space Center. McLaren created 106 Speedtail vehicles in 2018 with an asking price of around $2 million each.
