Where Is The Real Bonnie & Clyde Car?

Dustin Hawley | Dec 22, 2022

People are opinionated about their cars, and everyone has a unique set of preferences. Some may pay attention to the design, others - to technological features and characteristics. But what’s always been true is that everyone likes a good story, especially when it’s connected with a keepsake or a memento.

Where Is The Real Bonnie and Clyde Car

And, just like any other material possession, cars can also have good stories behind them. Especially when one such vehicle belonged to the most notorious pair of criminals in American history.

Bonnie & Clyde - An Introduction

Bonnie and Clyde were undoubtedly the most infamous criminal duo in American history. Their lives were romanticized and reviled. Pop culture is in love with Bonnie and Clyde. You can see this with the films, countless series, and pop songs written about the duo. They committed horrible and violent crimes, with numerous cases of kidnapping and murder pinned on them.

The socio-economic situation of America during that time made these partners in crime almost iconic. They were regarded as some kind of folk heroes despite their actions. As an impact of the Great Depression, the country was rife with crime, and that’s when Bonnie and Clyde started their crime spree. Their crimes were as magnificent as pop culture makes them out to be. However, they were considered Robin Hood because they were fighting the cops and the FBI (called the Bureau of Investigation back then). Family, friends, and strangers - everyone came to their aid when they were in need.

Which Car Did Bonnie & Clyde Drive?

The 1934 Ford Model 40 B Fordor Deluxe sedan is the name of the car that the real Bonnie and Clyde drove. Many Ford enthusiasts regard it as one of the most delicate designs by Ford. It is a classic car and the fact that it was faster than most police cars of that time made it the best getaway car for Bonnie and Clyde.

The vehicle has a superb bodyline, a rakes front grill with a wide surround, vertical hood slats with two release levers instead of one, slightly smaller headlights, and cowl lamps. The interiors boasted a leather finish and made the car look even classier. The 1934 Model featured some changes that distinguished it from its prior models. The car in which they were killed was tan-colored. It mimicked the expensive vehicles of that era. The addition of the V8 engine to 85 horsepower helped accelerate sales.

However, the car didn’t belong to Bonnie and Clyde. It belonged to a man named Ruth Warren, who purchased it for $835 at the Mosby-Mack Motor Company. Bonnie and Clyde stole it from his garage in May 1934 and used it to carry out their criminal activities.

Where Is The Real Bonnie & Clyde’s Car?

The real Bonnie and Clyde’s car is as difficult to locate today as it was during their crime spree. The vehicle has 112 bullet holes from the 167 rounds fired. The tale is that the bullet-riddled car sold for $250,000 in 1988 to the owners of Whiskey Pete’s Primm Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The FBI also displayed the ill-fated 1934 Ford Fordor sedan as a part of the Al Capone to Al Qaida exhibition. Clyde’s shredded shirt accompanies the car. It has several ragged holes in both the front and back. Marie Barrow, Clyde’s sister, signed the inside of the shirt to attest to the garment’s authenticity. The blood stains are apparent, but time has faded them considerably.

The infamous killers used the vast roads of America to their advantage. Their adventure stories in the world of crime have made them somewhat of a celebrity couple in the minds of most Americans. They traveled mainly through Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Missouri and terrified the nation with their intense killing spree of 13 people. The car is essential to American history because it is their death car. The devilish duo lost their lives in this ride because it couldn’t outrun the bullets despite being the fastest car.

Summary

The Bonnie and Clyde car is currently on display at Primm Valley Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Bonnie and Clyde, the notorious criminals, were idolized because they were a young, attractive couple, in love. They were not married, which added to the salaciousness of the matter, but they were idealized nonetheless. They were perfect as tabloid material. The public interest kept them in the purview as they made it to the front-page news in popular newspapers. The cops found a few rolls of undeveloped film during a raid at one of their safe houses. The local newspapers published these images, taking Bonnie and Clyde from wanted outlaws to criminal celebrities.

As far as the Bonnie and Clyde car is concerned, the car’s legitimacy is rather complicated. The authenticity issues are due to many fake death automobiles on display. Most of these fakes are from the 1967 movie ‘Bonnie and Clyde by Warner Bros. The dead car is parked close to the main cashier cage on the luxurious carpet in Primm, Nevada.
