Where Can I Find Out When I Got My Driver’s License?

Dustin Hawley | Dec 29, 2022

Even though drivers experience car-related issues a lot, nothing is more important than a set of documents for it. Car titles and registration cards are needed to avoid trouble with the law and when selling or buying a car. But, above all else, these confirm your ownership of the vehicle, ensuring the safety of your rightful property.

Where Can I Find Out When I Got My Driver’s License

From time to time, you’ll be required to glance at the car title, license, or registration card for various procedures. So, it’s a good idea to keep them in a safe spot to use as needed. However, documents tend to get lost after some time or are generally a bit confusing to navigate.

Finding Out When The License Was Issued

You can do a few things to find out when you were licensed. First and foremost, just take your original document, and there will be the exact issue date. It is the very first time you get your license.

But if you renewed or got a new license, you’ll need to contact the DMV. They will have the data and will quickly look it up for you. Plus, you could request driving records online, and the date will also be there.

Generally, there are reasons for looking up this date. The insurance company may want to verify your driving experience to determine how much they’ll charge. It’s the usual, the more years spent behind the wheel, the less risk there is for a driving accident to take place. And if you’re ever going abroad and want to rent or hire an auto, the rental company will also consider your experience practically for the same reasons.

Losing Your Driver’s License

One of the more pressing problems you could run into when looking for the number is that you’ve lost the current license or it was stolen. Although you need to keep this document at hand all the time, there’s no saying when you’ll accidentally misplace it or leave it out in the open for someone to grab. In all those cases, you should immediately apply for a replacement.

The best-case scenario is that you’ll be able to locate it on your own. But if you fail to find it or it takes too long, go for a replacement as soon as possible.

Replacing The License

If applying online, the process looks like this:

  • Report your license as lost or stolen. Some states require you to file a report with the police. But whether it must be done or not, it’s always a good idea to contact law enforcement.
  • Check the DMV website for instructions. This step is purely to determine if there’s any online procedure for you to do it.
  • Fill out the replacement form. Your local DMV will require you to fill out an application, which should be available on the website. It’s a multi-step one, so be prepared to enter personal information that matches their records.
  • Submit the paperwork and pay the fee. Depending on your state, the fee ranges from $15 to $30. However, it covers a replacement card only, so you’ll still have to pay the license renewal fee. After adding payment information and submitting the form, you’ll get to a confirmation page that you copy/screenshot and print out. Later, you’ll also get a temporary license.
  • Wait for the document to arrive. After all four steps, your new license will be sent to you by mail within 2-4 weeks.

If you like a more personal touch and go to the department physically, the steps are the same, except for the fact that Step 2 is replaced by making an appointment. However, you could just go there and do everything in a live queue.

Summary

So, to learn when you first got the driver’s license, you should keep the original. It’ll help fasten the process and make things simpler. If you can’t locate it, you could contact the DMV and find out everything you need.

However, If you think your current license is missing or stolen, apply for a replacement as soon as possible. It will mitigate hazards associated with losing the document. Plus, the steps are easy-to-follow, with the possibility of never showing up at the DMV in person.
