What is a Shaker Hood?

Dustin Hawley | May 21, 2023

There's no disputing that a decent shaker hood is a stylish item that helps a performance car stand out, but it's more than that. A shaker hood also provides a minor performance gain over a stock intake system, another reason why performance car owners are raving about it.

what is a shaker hood

A shaker hood, which can protrude through functioning holes in classic muscle car bonnets, has some genuine advantages for little power boosts. Car hoods and bonnets come in various forms and sizes, with designs ranging from merely beautiful curves to highly utilitarian divots and scoops.

How Does Shaker Hood Work?

A shaker hood is composed of two distinct pieces that function together. The first is a customized intake air scoop fitted on the engine block and your vehicle's air filter.

As you drive, one or more intake vents in this scoop-shaped intake force air into the engine. It's a short ram intake that efficiently feeds the engine with as much air as it can utilize while driving.

A shaker hood's actual hood is its additional component. A hole in the hood's traditional design allows it to cover the intake scoop's top.

The elevated hood scoop that emerges from the hood when it is closed is visible, and there is a tiny space between the hood and the scoops on either side. The configuration is straightforward and appealing on a variety of muscle cars.

What Makes It a Shaker Hood?

The shaker hood gets its name from one simple fact: when in use, it rattles. This scoop rattles when you drive since it is on the engine block. One of the reasons there is a small gap between the real scoop and the hood itself is to prevent it from resonating as you drive. You'll feel a slight vibration when you drive with this hood.

Shaker hoods have many distinct names, but because of their simplicity, most automotive enthusiasts have referred to them as shaker hoods.

Benefits of Shaker Hood

Experience True Performance Enhancements

A shaker hood helps your car run better than a standard air intake in a few different ways.

With the help of this unique intake, your engine receives more air that is denser and faster. The hood improves the quantity of oxygen delivered to the engine, increasing the power produced during combustion.

A shaker hood will provide extra horsepower while moving along at high speeds, but the advantages are marginal at low rates.

Shorter Air Travel Distance

The Shaker hood reduces the distance that air travels to get to the engine and air filter. Air travels directly to the engine since the intake scoop is situated immediately on top of the machine.

Cooler Air

More oxygen molecules are present in cold air than in warm air. Shaker hoods speed up the delivery of outside air to the engine, resulting in cooler air when it does. This is because intake air warms up as it travels to the machine, and the engine bay is often warmer than the ambient temperature.

Boosted Repeat Air Volume

The total volume of air within each cylinder during combustion is critical if you want your engine to produce as much power as feasible.

The car manufacturer closely regulates the amount of oxygen in the cylinders concerning the overall volume of gasoline vapor.

Guards Your Car from Pooling Water

Even though puddles are not something muscle vehicles are made for, you might run into one while traveling through a downpour.

A unique air intake gently raises the point of entry of air into your engine's intake system. You should protect your engine from moisture by slightly increasing the intake. You won't have to worry as much if you have to drive through a pool of water with a shaker hood.

Conclusion

Air is forced into the intake using sealed ram air systems, which raises the pressure and airflow into the throttle body. Like other CAIs, the engine bay's air is circulated while damp air is drawn through the filter.

Even though it may not have been revolutionary, the shaker hood played a vital role in the development of muscle car engineering in the 1970s. Although the power increases were minimal, it was still amazing to see an engine trying to rip itself free from its mounts seemingly.
