What Is A Hellephant Crate Engine?

Dustin Hawley | Dec 08, 2022

The Hellephant crate engine was introduced in 2018 by MOPAR when the company showcased it through the 1968 Dodge Charger restomod. This model was later considered the ultimate combination of MOPAR’s two unique creations in engine power —the Hellcat and the Elephant.

What Is A Hellephant Crate Engine

About The Hellephant Crate Engine

The Hellephant Crate Engine goes beyond the normal parameters of motor engines available today. As the name suggests, Hellephants can be described as a combination of Hellcat and Elephant engines. They’re responsible for the boom in Hellcat car popularity seen over the few years.

Hellcat cars have taken over the market as a solid muscle car alternative, beating some models selling for double or triple its price. The name is symbolic of capabilities achieved due to the Hellephant engines used in these cars. These boast 1000 hp capacity and 950 pound-feet of torque.

The Introduction Of The Hellephant Crate Engine

The Hellephant appeared due to the popularity of the Street and Racing Technology model that featured the 707 hp Hellcat Hemi. This engine was later combined with the second-generation Hemi, nicknamed the Elephant, because of its large size, heavy weight, and considerable power.

The Specifications

Based on the Hellcat, it boasts a massive bulked-up displacement of 426 сubic Inches or 7.0 Liters with 4.0 inches of stroke and bore specs at 4.125 inches. But even with such an enormous size, it’s still comparatively lightweight due to being made from aluminum compared to similar engines, which are all 7.0 Litre V-8s. It also has an intake valve size of 2.13 inches, while its exhaust valves are only 1.65 inches.

The Hellephant Crate engine has an all-aluminum exterior with hemispherical aluminum chamber cylinder heads. The piston is made from forged aluminum, while the camshaft is from nodular iron. The bolts are cast aluminum with four-bolt main caps, and the 4240 H-beam connecting rods have a compression ratio of 9:5. All these features collectively give it a magnificent look.

In comparison to its predecessor Hellcrate engine, unveiled by the same company just a year ago, this one boasts almost the same specs as an SRT Hellcat, matching 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque with a displacement of 376 cubic inches, or 6.2 liters, with 103.9 mm (4.09 inches) for the bore and 90.9 mm (3.58 inches) for the stroke. While almost having the same redline of around 6,200-rpm and similar architecture with the addition of lightweight aluminum bottoms, Hellelephant is capable of 293 more horsepower, making it a much more efficient engine loved by car enthusiasts around the world.

With an MSRP of $29,995, which would increase with accessories, such as harness, ECM, gas pedals, accessory drive kit, and A/C kit, the final price of picking one for your car would come to around $33,343.

Summary

Thanks to its excellent supercharger unit and highly efficient rotor system, the engine delivers what it promises: an impressive 1000 horsepower and 950 feet of torque at the crank, which surpasses any factory-spec crate available on the market today. But given its price and limited availability, things might get a little challenging.

After its announcement, the model was sold out within a short period, even with such a massive price tag attached to it, thanks to people who would like to try on the robust performance it promises to deliver. It took almost a year for it to be delivered to its customers, with it being hand-made and having a production capacity limited to just 100 units. But even with its limited availability, it has reached the hands of car enthusiasts. The enthusiasts have shown us the value of using this powerhouse of an engine, which has street cred and the power to help you up the game in the racing world!
