Vehicles Discontinued in 2023

Dustin Hawley | Jun 02, 2023

As the years go by, automakers discontinue some models in their lineup to reflect changes in consumer preferences, to eliminate uncompetitive models, or to get rid of models that compete with others in their lineup. This trend continues in 2023, with several automotive giants ending production of some of their models. Here is a list of vehicles discontinued for 2023.

Discontinued vehicles for 2023

Discontinued Small Cars

Chevrolet Spark

The Chevrolet Spark, which even for the 2022 model started at $14,595, is among the cheapest cars in America. However, its time has come to an end as consumers are now showing more interest in smaller SUVs than in small cars.

Hyundai Veloster

The 275-horsepower Veloster N survived for the 2022 model year after Hyundai discontinued the base Veloster and Veloster Turbo models in 2021. However, the surviving three-door hot hatch will not make it to 2023 due to Hyundai's increasing focus on plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Discontinued Sedans

Acura ILX

The Acura ILX, which made its debut in 2012 as the entry-level Acura based on the ninth-generation Honda Civic, is being replaced by the 2023 Integra, which is based on the eleventh-generation Honda Civic platform. The ILX received facelifts in 2016 and 2019.

Honda Insight

The Honda Insight, a gas-electric compact sedan based on the tenth-generation Civic, has sold over 70,000 units since its introduction in 2018. To begin a new chapter with the upcoming Civic Hybrid, Honda plans to discontinue the Insight.

Hyundai Accent

Although the Accent has an eye-catching design and sporty character, the Hyundai Venue, the automaker's small SUV, is better equipped. As a result, Hyundai has decided to discontinue the Accent to encourage consumers to opt for its small SUV.

Hyundai Ioniq

Hyundai has discontinued both the Ioniq Hybrid and Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid for 2023 to make way for a new list of EVs in its lineup, some of which still carry the Ioniq nameplate, such as the Ioniq 5 SUV and the Ioniq 6 sedan. The Ioniq nameplate is intended to become a sub-brand for the automaker's EV lineup.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class

As the brand's entry-level sedan, the subcompact A-Class shared the same segment with the CLA. To eliminate competition within its lineup, Mercedes is discontinuing the A-Class, while the CLA remains thanks to its distinctive design and powerful engine. This leaves the CLA, which costs $4,250 more, as the only option for A-Class buyers.

Toyota Avalon

Toyota is retiring its full-size sedan, the Avalon, as it introduces the new 2023 Crown Hybrid. The Avalon, which has been a longstanding nameplate for nearly 30 years, has struggled to find enough buyers in recent years, leading to its discontinuation.

Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat, the automaker's midsize offering positioned between the Jetta and the Arteon, has struggled to compete with the Camry and Accord. With just 24,000 units sold in the past two years, VW announced its discontinuation after running a limited edition for the 2022 model year.

Discontinued SUVs

Buick Encore

The Buick Encore, which has been on the market for almost a decade, has been selling alongside the new Encore GX since 2020. To eliminate internal competition, Buick has discontinued the old Encore.

Ford EcoSport

The Ford EcoSport has been Ford's offering in the subcompact SUV segment since 2017. Although it is Ford's entry-level and most affordable SUV, it has seen a decline in sales, leading the automaker to refocus on models that are performing better.

Lexus RX L

In 2017, Lexus introduced the RX L to meet consumers' need for three-row seating SUVs. However, it had a cramped third row due to being based on the same wheelbase as the base RX model. With the upcoming redesigned 2023 RX, Lexus is discontinuing the RX L and plans to replace it with a potential three-row SUV named the TX.

Nissan Rogue Sport

Nissan is streamlining its SUVs by discontinuing the Rogue Sport, which is a smaller version of the Rogue and has not received any updates since its introduction in 2017. This leaves only the Nissan Kicks, the larger Rogue, and the three-row Pathfinder as options for consumers seeking a Nissan SUV.

Discontinued Sports Cars and Coupes

Acura NSX

Acura is discontinuing the NSX gas-electric sports car, including the Type S model, which was limited to 350 units for the 2022 model year. The NSX had a seven-year run on the U.S. market before its sudden discontinuation.

Ford GT

The Ford GT, which was offered in several special editions over a six-year production lifespan, has reached the end of the road. The most recent release was the LM Edition in October 2022. Ford is shifting its resources towards electric vehicles.

Infiniti Q60

Infinity is saying goodbye to the two-door coupe version of the Q50 sedan. The Q60 offered unique styling and powerful engine options, such as the 400 horsepower in the Red Sport 400 trim, but struggled to find its place among competitors, making its discontinuation unsurprising.

Summary

The automotive industry is constantly changing, with some models seeing a rise or decline in sales and forcing automakers to make tough decisions. It makes sense for automakers to allocate more resources to models that are performing well.
