Dustin Hawley | Apr 02, 2023

If a driver or a passenger wishes to get rid of their used chewing gum while driving, they frequently throw it out the window. Sometimes people stick used chewing gum on cars merely to irritate people.

How To Remove Chewing Gum From Car Paint

As chewing gums are frequently thrown out the window, they may drop directly on your car or become caught in your tire and then fly onto your vehicle. When it sticks on the exterior and dries, the gum can quickly become a hassle to remove.

What should you do when you face such a situation? Don’t worry; the article aims to explain just that.

Removing The Chewing Gum From The Paint

Here are a few basic methods for properly removing chewing gum from your car's paint without harming it.

1. Scrape The Gum From Your Car

Discovering chewing gum on your car is more than just a sticky problem; it is also ugly.

While cleaning gum from your car might be unpleasant, it is typically a simple cure if you have the right equipment and experience.

Materials Required

  • A palette knife or a plastic razor blade
  • A basin or bucket of soapy water
  • Towel or sponge
  • Water

Process Outline

  • Take caution with the razor. Pick up a non-sharp razor blade or palette knife. Keep the edge facing away from your hand and fingers to avoid harm during slippage.
  • Insert the blade beneath the gum. Press the blade's side between the gum and the paint to remove the gum. Slide the sharp side along a gummed edge beneath the length of the gum you want to remove. Repeat this technique until all chewing gum is gone, taking care not to harm your car's paint.
  • Clean the side of the car. Dip a sponge or cloth into the soapy water and gently scrub the side surface. Once clean, rinse with just water to remove the soap. Allow the paint to air dry for a few minutes before inspecting it to ensure that all the gum has been removed. If you weren’t successful, repeat the scraping and cleaning procedure.

2. Use A Bug And Tar Remover

Bug and tar remover works on chewing gum by softening it and making it easier to remove.

Materials Required

  • Remover of bugs and tar
  • Plastic razor blade
  • Paper towel or rag

Process Outline

  • Spray bug and tar remover on the chewing gum. Ensure that you fill the gum with the spray and the surrounding areas. Allow the spray to soak for several minutes to soften the gum.
  • Scrape the gum's base. With a plastic razor blade, carefully scrape the bottom of the chewing gum. Keep the paint lubricated with a bug and tar remover as you work to keep the razor blade from becoming stuck in the gum. Using a metal razor blade to scrape off the gum may severely harm your paint.
  • Focus on the gum spot's sides. Work your way around the gum spot, removing it from your vehicle's paint. After removing the majority of the gum, there may still be some gum residue attached to the paint that you may deal with.
  • Take out the gum. Using a paper towel or cloth remove the loosened gum from your car's surface using a paper towel or cloth. You should be able to remove it altogether. However, some small fragments may remain on the paint.
  • Redo the procedure. Reapply the bug and tar remover to the gum residue. Allow it to soak for a few minutes to soften, and take it off the paint.

3. Freeze The Gum

Chewing gum becomes fragile when frozen, and it may be removed from the paint by swiftly freezing it with bottled air.

This method works incredibly effectively for gum that is still rounded up and not spread.

Materials

  • Plastic razor blade
  • Compressed air

Process Outline

  • Spray the gum with compressed air. Let it freeze up properly.
  • Remove the gum. Pick up the gum with your fingernail or a plastic razor blade while it is frozen. It should shatter into pieces.
  • Refreeze the gum if necessary. If the gum starts to melt before most of it is removed, re-freeze it with compressed air.
  • Take out the gum. Break off as much gum as you can from the paint, and be careful not to remove any paint.
  • Defrost the gum. Allow the paint to melt fully when only little gum particles remain on it.
  • Use a residue remover. Soak a cloth with residue remover and wipe it on any remaining gum residue on the paint.
  • Wipe the residue away. With a wet rag, rub the residue remover in tiny circles. The gum will come out in little pieces and attach to the towel. Wipe the area down with a clean, dry cloth.

4. Use Peanut Butter

To dissolve and release the gum, use peanut butter or Avon's Skin-So-Soft (for a glob of gum or smeared gum)

Materials

  • smooth peanut butter or Avon's Skin-So-Soft
  • A gentle cloth

Method

  • Smear the gum with peanut butter or Avon's Skin-So-Soft.
  • Work it up beneath the gum and along the borders as well.
  • Allow it to work for a few minutes on the gum.
  • Wipe away the gum with a gentle cloth.

5. Use A Cleaning Solution

To remove the gum, use a cleaning solution containing d-limonene.

Materials

  • The d-limonene cleanser (Sold at hardware stores and online.)
  • A soft cloth

Method

  • Soak a soft cloth with the d-limonene cleaner.
  • Apply it to the gum.
  • To soften the gum, take care and wipe the cleaner around the edges.
  • Using a soft cloth, wipe the gum from the vehicle.

Note: D-limonene cleaners are frequently marketed as citrus-based cleaners. Check the label to see whether it includes d-limonene.

Summary

Regardless of how you remove the chewing gum off the exterior of your vehicle, wash and wax it afterward to restore the finish.

You want to avoid chipping the paint off your vehicle if you use specific instruments, such as putty knives or a scraper. Also, remember that no matter your approach, park the car in the shade or in the garage to keep it cool while you wipe the gum off.
