How Much Does It Cost To Get Your Car Serviced?

Dustin Hawley | Apr 23, 2023

To determine the cost of maintaining your car, several factors must be taken into consideration, including the brand, type, and age of the vehicle, as well as driving conditions, usage, and the frequency and level of maintenance required. High-performance and luxury vehicles, as well as older vehicles, typically cost more to maintain than regular cars.

How Much Does It Cost To Get Your Car Serviced

Service intervals and the type of services offered can vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle and manufacturer recommendations. It is vital to consult the vehicle's owner's manual and consult a trusted service provider to determine the appropriate service interval and cost. Maintenance services typically come in three forms - interim, full, and major. The specific activities and cost will vary for each type of service."

Cost Of Interim Service

Interim service, also known as basic service, is a relatively uncomplicated procedure. Services typically include changing the oil, replacing filters, checking fluids, battery, vehicle lighting, and other essential tasks. An inspection of other components will also be carried out to check for signs of wear, including brakes, exhaust systems, tire tread, suspensions, and steering.

On average, an interim service costs around $130, but this can range from $95 to $237, depending on the level of service provided. Interim service usually takes about two hours to complete.

Cost Of Full Service

A full service, also known as an annual service, is recommended every 12 months or 12,000 miles. The basic car service, the interim service, is also performed during a complete service.

In addition to the interim service, more extensive inspections and replacements of components are conducted. It includes checks of the engine, gearbox, front and rear brakes, parking brake, throttle operation, heating and cooling systems, and up to 80 other checks.

On average, a full service costs $180, but you can expect to pay between $157 and $355. A full service takes approximately three hours to complete.

Cost Of Major Service

A Major Service takes place every two years and offers the most comprehensive car maintenance. It involves thoroughly checking your vehicle and replacing parts that show signs of wear, such as spark plugs, brake discs, brake pads, fuel lines, and pedals. The service also includes inspections of wiring and cables, transmission, road test, safety checks, and all checks and replacements included in full or complete service.

On average, a major service costs $336 and takes approximately three to four hours to complete. However, the cost can range from $296 to $474, depending on the level of service provided.

Factors Affecting Service Cost

Vehicle Brand

High-end vehicles generally come at a higher cost for both purchase and maintenance. These vehicles often require unique parts and higher-grade materials that are expensive and difficult to find. The maintenance costs can vary between different brands and may necessitate a visit to a specialized technician or service center. For instance, an oil change for a BMW X7 is likely to be more expensive and require more oil than an oil change for a Toyota Corolla.

Vehicle Type

High-performance cars, high-end sedans, and SUVs are equipped with high-performance engines and specifications that differ from typical family cars. As a result, these vehicles require unique materials, such as higher grades of oil, filters, and fluids in specific quantities for proper operation. Some parts may also have to be imported, and the delicate nature of working on such vehicles can increase service costs. For example, performing a service for a V8-engine car will typically be more expensive than administering a service for a 4-cylinder engine car, even within the same brand.

Vehicle Age

As a vehicle ages, the cost of maintenance will increase. Regular oil and filter changes will no longer be sufficient, and more parts may show signs of wear. For instance, a car that is ten years old or has 120,000 miles will likely require the replacement of several parts, including spark plugs, belts and bushings, brake lines, pads, rotors, suspensions, shock absorbers, and more.

Usage

How you use your vehicle and environmental conditions can affect the required frequency and level of service. Conditions such as hill climbs, regular towing, carrying multiple passengers, and hard acceleration and braking put extra stress on the engine and other parts, thus requiring more frequent servicing. If you have been in a dusty environment, you may need to change your engine and cabin air filters and possibly your engine oil more frequently.

Summary

As a vehicle owner, maintaining your car is unavoidable, as are the costs involved. As your vehicle gets more mileage, you will need an interim, complete, or major service. By considering their average costs, you can successfully budget for the upkeep of your car.
