Tire rims are pretty expensive to replace, and sooner or later, you’ll have to visit the auto shop with this exact purpose in mind. However, the time for replacement may come prematurely if you hit a pothole or damage them otherwise. So, it’s best to come prepared and learn as much as possible about the procedure, especially cost-wise.

Let’s look into replacing the rims in greater detail and explore all there is to it.
The rim connects the tire to the wheel and has a unique shape for this exact purpose. Because of that, the wheel assembly must be balanced, and the balancing weights must be attached to the rim with spring clamps or glue. Most cars and light trucks use deep, non-disassembled rims.
The deep rim rigidly connects to the disc, which attaches the wheel to the hub with bolts or nuts with studs. The deep rim flanges are tapered to fit the tire tightly to the rim. The rim flanges end in shaped flanges that serve as lateral restraints for the tire. The angle of the flanges is usually (5±1)°.
The distance between the flanges is called the rim profile width. The rim’s middle section has a recess to mount and dismount the tire on the rim. This recess (groove) can be located symmetrically to the wheel plane or offset.
Tire rims must sustain exposure to aggressive environments, which rings true in winter. Not to mention potholes, reagents, and temperature fluctuations negatively influencing rim service life. All this leads to rapid aging and causes dents and cracks to appear.
But if you live in the countryside and drive on unpaved roads, sand, stones, and small gravel, the disc surface is bound to experience the abrasive effect. With regular maintenance, you can extend the life of your tire rims. However, sometimes the damage is so severe that replacement is the only option left.
The relevant standards govern the rim dimensions and profile. Most manufacturers usually specify the basic rim dimensions, profile widths, and diameters in inches, except for Michelin, which uses millimeters. Each rim is labeled with an appropriate marking.
Let’s take a close look at a marking example: 5J × 13H2 ET 30.
5 is the rim width in inches.
13 is the rim diameter in inches.
J and H2 are design features of the rim profile.
ET 30 is 30 mm (from the German word Einpresstiefe − ET).
If you decide to install the tire rims yourself, you must do it in a particular sequence.
To do it, follow this scheme:
Changing and replacing your tire rims can cost anywhere from $200 to $500 per wheel or $800 to $2,000 for your entire car. The price depends on your vehicle and the car service, but the minimum cost of changing tire rims is around $200.
If your tire rims are just slightly cracked or scratched, there is a possibility that they may be repaired rather than replaced. In this case, you could pay significantly less, sometimes as little as $75 per wheel. Talk to your mechanic about the problem to learn more about your options.
If the tire rim is severely deformed, it’s almost impossible to restore its geometry. Such a rim should be replaced. As for alloy rims, it is possible to carry out rolling after heating. Argon welding is used to repair cracks. It is worth noting that repairing them with heat weakens the element structure and changes the metal structure.
