How Much Does A Gallon Of Diesel Weigh?

Dustin Hawley | Mar 26, 2023

Every vehicle needs fuel to run on the road, and that’s not a big secret. Usually, you can easily take care of this problem by visiting the nearest gas station, but sometimes you have to bring some with you for the road ahead.

How Much Does A Gallon Of Diesel Weigh

That’s doubly true for truck drivers, who prefer to store a significant amount of diesel somewhere in their vehicles. However, they also have to worry about weight, as misbalancing and disregarding truckload can easily cause problems. So, if you’re just interested in the topic or will have to get behind the wheel of a diesel-powered vehicle for a long drive, let’s discuss things in greater detail.

What Is Diesel?

Diesel is a type of fuel refined from crude oil and biomass. Freight, delivery trucks, farm, construction, and military vehicles have diesel engines, with some cars and light trucks included in the list.

Diesel-powered cars typically get better gas mileage or fuel efficiency than gasoline-powered vehicles, and as fuel prices have drastically escalated worldwide, owning a diesel vehicle is more lucrative. But, when transporting it, you must calculate the weight properly.

How Much Does A Gallon of Diesel Weigh?

So, now that you know all about diesel, it’s time to get to its weight. All in all, one gallon of diesel fuel weighs approximately 7.1 pounds. However, it’s a distillate fuel, and boiling and humidity changes may reduce weight. It also becomes denser at colder temperatures and less dense if it’s warm. Also, the grade of diesel slightly affects its weight.

Generally, diesel is denser than other fuels, so its weight is higher. To calculate it, you must multiply the number of gallons by 7, and you will get a pretty accurate estimate. However, for your safety and exact results, it’s best to multiply by 7.1.

The fuel weight of a diesel tank depends on capacity. Most big trucks have a fuel capacity of about 300 gallons or less. But If you have two 100-gallon fuel tanks, the fuel weight is about 1,400 pounds when the tanks are full.

Truck Weight Limits

Besides some obvious things, truck drivers should consider weight regulations when filling their tanks, as it affects the overall vehicle weight. That becomes especially true when carrying a load that puts you close to the range of your weight limits.

A fuel tank sits on each side of the truck, and the gas is distributed between the two tanks to balance the truck’s total weight. So, since diesel fuel weighs about 7 pounds per gallon, a full tank weighs approximately 875 to 2,100 pounds.

According to federal law, a single axle should have a load of around 20,000 pounds, and an axle spaced between 40 inches and 96 inches apart (tandem axles) is limited to 34,000 pounds. The gross vehicle weight shouldn’t exceed 80,000 pounds. You won’t only get into legal trouble if you ignore the law but also put extra strain on the engine, decreasing fuel efficiency and contributing to greater wear and tear. In case of an accident, there’ll be a higher chance of significant car damage and loss of life.

Summary

You can usually find diesel engines inside freight, delivery trucks, farm, construction, and military vehicles, along with some specific cars and light trucks. And, since it’s common, you should know that diesel fuel becomes denser at colder and less dense at warmer temperatures, with diesel's grade slightly affecting its weight.

However, one gallon of diesel fuel usually weighs approximately 7.1 pounds (3.22kg). And, if you know the tank or gas can capacity, just multiply it by the given number to get the exact weight.

However, if you’re transporting fuel in the trunk, somewhere inside your car, or carrying a hefty load in your truck, you should know the vehicle’s limits. If we’re talking about trucks, you can’t go beyond 80,000 pounds of overall weight, as exceeding it could decrease fuel efficiency and cause greater damage in case of an accident.
