How Long Is A Car Inspection Good For in Texas?

Dustin Hawley | Mar 13, 2023

A state inspection ensures your car is ready for the road by checking its safety features. It’s also a great way to protect yourself from car problems. If something isn’t working right after you buy it, but before registering it, your mechanic can fix it while they’re inspecting. That way, you won't have to worry about anything going wrong later.

How Long Is A Car Inspection Good For in Texas

The state inspection is mandatory by law and must be done at a certified inspection station. So, if it’s your first time doing it in Texas, this article will help you out here.

When Should I Get My Car Inspected?

Whether you're a new driver or just last had your vehicle inspected a while ago, it's essential to know when you'll need to get your car inspected. In Texas, annual inspections are required for most vehicles, and you need to do them yearly on the first day of October and the same period after that.

If you've recently purchased a vehicle and have never had an annual inspection before, you'll need to do one within 30 days from the date of purchase. However, if your vehicle is more than four years old but less than five years old, it's required that you obtain a safety inspection every six months instead of annually.

How Much Do Car Inspections Cost?

Several factors affect the cost of a car inspection. In some states, inspections are only required on certain vehicles and can cost between $5-$10. In others, they're standard for any car sold in that state.

In Texas, for example, a regular safety inspection costs around $20-$30, depending on whether or not you need an emissions test. The average price for an emissions test alone is about $15-$20. But if your vehicle requires an emission test due to its age or mileage and doesn't pass the first time, it will have to be retested before passing again. That means paying another fee for another failed attempt at passing the test.

How Long Does a Car Inspection Take?

It depends. If you're in a hurry and know your car inside and out, you could get through an inspection in as little as fifteen minutes. If you're not so familiar with the ins and outs of your vehicle, it may take up to an hour or more.

Some states require that inspectors perform a thorough visual inspection of each vehicle before issuing their official report, which can lead to delays depending on how long this takes. Inspectors often use special tools to help them identify problems with safety equipment like tires and lights.

If they find something amiss during their inspection, for example, low air pressure, they'll note it in their report so that you can take care of it before driving again. They also look for defects like rust or faulty brakes that could pose a danger if left unattended.

Necessary Documents

As a car inspection is mandatory by law, you are also required to prepare a couple of documents:

  • Vehicle Registration
  • Proof of Insurance
  • Safety Inspection Certificate
  • Driver's License
  • Proof of Vehicle Ownership

You do not have to worry about your registration expiring while you wait for an inspection. There’s a grace period, and it varies based on the state. For example, in Texas, a vehicle's registration can go up to 30 days past its expiration date before it is considered expired and must be renewed.

However, suppose you can provide proof of a valid out-of-state inspection or emissions test. In that case, the grace period is extended by another 30 days, so your vehicle will remain operational until the DMV issues your new registration and tags.

Out-Of-State Inspections

If you're a Texas driver who plans on taking your car out of state, don't worry! You can still get an inspection. The best way is to get it done online. You can do this at the DMV website or another service provider's site that offers online inspections.

If that’s not an option, most gas stations also offer inspections. Make sure they use NDI standards to be valid in Texas when you return home. And if none of those options work for whatever reason, there are always dealerships and repair shops around town that will gladly help with this.

Summary

Keeping your car in good condition and ensuring it runs well is essential. So, having it inspected yearly is mandatory and necessary for proper maintenance. However, don’t forget to check out the car yourself before the inspection, so you can pass it quickly with no issues and keep driving.

Also, acquire a valid state inspection sticker in the current year. If you have questions about which vehicles need inspections, call your local DMV or search online for DMV vehicle registration requirements.
