For the 2022 model year, Volvo offers car buyers some meaningful changes starting with installing new mild-hybrid powertrains in several of its models—the S60 and S90 sedans, V90 Cross Country wagon, and XC60 SUV. In addition, the Volvo model line welcomes the all-new, all-electric C40 Recharge compact crossover while saying goodbye to all non-Cross Country versions of the V60 and V90 luxury wagons.
On the technology front, several 2022 Volvo models receive a new and more connective Android-based infotainment suite—with built-in apps, navigation, and digital assistant—replacing Volvo's previous in-house Sensus system. But curiously, Volvo's familiar drive-mode selector dial and built-in rearview mirror compass have disappeared from the entire product line.
All Volvo cars and SUVs undergo at least minor revisions for 2022. Here are the updates for each model.
The most important news for the 2022 Volvo lineup is the addition of the all-electric C40 Recharge compact SUV. This fastback variant of the XC40 Recharge gets its energy from a 78-kWh battery that drives dual electric motors at the front and rear axles for all-wheel drive (AWD) capability. Its sleek and sporty exterior design foretells its 402-horsepower performance. The C40 matches the XC40's all-electric range of 208 miles.
Within, a leather-free cabin speaks to Volvo's commitment to sustainability. The C40 Recharge enjoys a well-appointed interior and Volvo's latest Android-based infotainment system. Overall, this all-new fully electric SUV is big on style but falls a little short on cargo space.
Three years after being completely redesigned, the compact S60 sedan trades its long-standing T5 engine for a more efficient B5 mild-hybrid powertrain with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Combined fuel economy with this 48-volt hybrid system rises to 26 miles per gallon (up from 23 mpg). The twin-charged T6 engine is no longer available for 2022, but the range-topping twin-charged T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain of the S60 Recharge model carries over from last year.
Aside from engineering updates, the S60 receives some new exterior paint and wheel design options. And the Momentum trim level no longer offers standard front fog lights. The R-Design and Inscription trims and the S60 Recharge model receive standard wireless charging for mobile devices.
For the 2021 model year, Volvo's large S90 sedan received an exterior facelift, but for 2021 the big changes occur under the hood. As such, the S90 replaces its T6 turbocharged and supercharged powertrain with a new twin-charged B6 mild-hybrid propulsion system. On the tech side, an Android-based infotainment suite is new to the cabin.
For 2022, the standard headlight washer nozzles are no longer standard equipment and are now a part of the Climate package. Enhanced air filtration can no longer be acquired as a standalone option and is now a part of the Advanced package.
For 2022, Volvo guts the V60 model range; the automaker discontinues all variants of the luxury wagon except for the rugged AWD Cross Country model and the Recharge PHEV version. This means Volvo no longer offers the Momentum, R-Design, or Inscription trim levels with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder T5 powertrain.
Changes to the remaining two V60 models are minor. The V60 Cross Country receives wireless device charging, while the V60 Recharge model loses its standard heated windshield wiper blades.
The special-order V90 luxury wagon is discontinued for 2022, leaving the V90 Cross Country as the lone offering for this model line. The slightly raised off-road wagon undergoes the same revisions as the S90 luxury sedan. That means a new twin-charged B6 mild-hybrid powertrain replaces the long-standing T6 engine.
Inside, a new Android-based infotainment suite replaces the former in-house Sensus system. The headlight washer nozzles go from standard equipment to the Climate package, and enhanced air filtration is no longer a standalone option. Instead, it now resides in the Advanced equipment package.
Volvo's subcompact XC40 SUV receives minor changes for 2022, starting with the base Momentum trim no longer offering front fog lights. The R-Design and Inscription trims receive standard wireless device charging, but all trims lose standard rear door power child locks as standard equipment.
The all-electric XC40 Recharge model also receives some meaningful enhancements. Just one year after its introduction, the zero-tailpipe-emissions SUV gains a 360-degree-view parking camera system and a 12-volt outlet in the cargo area as standard equipment. It also gets a new Android infotainment system.
For 2022, the Volvo XC60 compact SUV replaces its T5 and T6 engines with the B5 and B6 2.0-liter 4-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrains, respectively. The two 48-volt hybrid systems boost efficiency but still deliver potent turbocharged (B5) or twin-charged (B6) performance.
Aesthetically, the XC60 gets exterior styling tweaks with revised bumpers, concealed tailpipes, and new wheel designs. Inside, there's a new Android infotainment system and standard wireless device charging. And out back, the XC60 features a new standard motion-activated tailgate release.
Like other Volvo models, enhanced air filtration and headlight washer nozzles go from standalone equipment to becoming option package inclusions.
Aside from the newly hidden tailpipes, the Volvo XC90 flagship SUV is unchanged from the outside for 2022. Within, the base Momentum trim gets standard navigation, while the top-level Inscription trim no longer offers perforated upholstery in the second row. Like other Volvo models, the enhanced air filtration system—previously a standalone option—is now grouped into the Advanced package. The Headlight washer nozzles—once standard—are bundled into the optional Climate package.
