Silicon Valley-based electric-vehicle (EV) startup Lucid Motors will launch its first series-production car for the 2022 model year. The large luxury sedan, called the Lucid Air, features dual electric-drive motors and directly targets the Tesla Model S. Every version of the Lucid Air offers well over 400 miles of range based on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ratings.

Lucid designed and manufactured every major drivetrain component on the Air, including the battery pack, to improve packaging and efficiency. The company assembles the Air at its manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona. Plans are underway to expand the factory to accommodate the second Lucid model, an SUV known as Project Gravity, set to debut in 2023.
Pricing for the 2022 Lucid Air electric luxury sedan ranges from $77,400 to $169,000, less a $7,500 federal tax credit. Lucid offers the Air in Pure, Touring, Grand Touring, Dream Edition P (Performance), and Dream Edition R (Range) trim levels, though both Dream Edition trims are sold out. Horsepower ranges from 480 on the Air Pure to 800 on the Grand Touring (and an incredible 1,111 on the Dream Edition P). All-wheel drive is standard.
Depending on the wheel/tire package, the EPA rates the Air Grand Touring for 469-517 miles of range. The agency has not rated the lower trims, but Lucid estimates 406 miles for both. Lucid claims the Air needs only 20 minutes to regain 300 miles of range when plugged into a DC fast charger. The company will provide three years of complimentary access to the Electrify America charging network to anyone who reserves an Air before the end of the 2021 calendar year.
As this is a proper luxury sedan, the Air comes standard with a deluxe infotainment system and a collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) known as Lucid DreamDrive that will support Level 3 semi-autonomous driving assistance pending regulatory approval.
