Car Buying Vs Car Leasing

Dustin Hawley | Jun 04, 2023

Buying a car can be expensive. Owning a brand-new car is luxurious but can dent your finances in the long run. Fortunately, car leasing can come in handy. Car leasing gives consumers a chance to own a new vehicle with a monthly payment that is usually lower than purchasing a car. Leasing allows you to replace your car while maintaining relatively low monthly payments.

Car Buying Vs Car Leasing

Car leasing is now common throughout the automotive marketplace. According to the Experian credit bureau, about three in 10 new cars driven off new car dealer lots are leased, rather than purchased.

Buying A Car

Buying a car has been and will still be the most popular way to get behind the wheel of a new ride. Buying a new car can be expensive so bargaining or negotiating a price for a car, truck, or SUV is understandable.

A car loan might be the best option to pay that price. Trade-ins or down payments are allowed but if you choose to pay the entire amount, then the entire cost plus the cost of interest on the car loan, if you have, must be paid.

When you finance a car, the lender holds the title to the vehicle until you pay off the loan. Car loans are obtained from banks, credit unions, and finance companies.

After applying for a car loan and receiving approval, the lender sends the money to pay for the vehicle. The length of an auto loan is called its term. Terms vary from a few years to as many as seven or eight. Many experts advise people seeking to buy cars to use car loans to get them for five years and not more.

What Is Leasing?

Leasing is like renting a car for an extended period. Instead of paying the entire purchase price, like you would if you were buying the vehicle. With a lease, you just pay for the depreciation expected to occur during the term of the lease, plus the interest and fees.

There are open and closed-end leases, but most auto leases are closed-end leases with the residual value at the end of the lease locked in before you even drive off the lot.

A down payment usually has to be made on a leased car. Note that the remainder of the lease cost is split into equal monthly payments that include interest. A typical lease term is for two or three years, though a lease agreement gets written for almost any length.

Getting a lease may sound simple but is a complex financial transaction. In a lease agreement, capitalised cost, residual value, rent charges, depreciation, and use tax all affect the lease agreement.

Benefits Of Leasing A Car

Although you may not own a car after the leasing period, there are several benefits of leasing versus buying a car.

When you lease a car, you pay monthly payments lower than a car loan on the same vehicle.

Also, the leased car will always have warranty coverage. Moreover, money gets saved on sales tax and has a lower down payment.

Disadvantages Of Leasing A Car

While leasing has its benefits, there may be some disadvantages. Consider the downside to leasing before you get locked in a leasing agreement.

When you lease a car, you do not automatically own the vehicle. There is always car payment to pay. Also, there are restrictions on how to use the vehicle. At the end of the lease, you may also have to pay for excessive damages if you turn in the vehicle in poor condition and have exceeded mileage limits. A lease is a binding contract that limits the car lease customer.

Car Buying VS Car Leasing, Which Is Better?

There is no easy answer to the question of whether it is better to buy or lease a new car. Each method has a share of limitations and advantages.

Although you may get lower monthly payments with a lease, you do not own the vehicle automatically. Lease customers are strictly bound by a lease agreement. At the end of the lease, you may also have to pay for excessive damages if you turn in the vehicle in poor condition and have exceeded mileage limits.

Buying a car is naturally more expensive since you have to pay the complete purchase price of the vehicle. Note that, once you pay off your loan, your payments end there and there. When you buy a vehicle, your sales taxes are higher with the purchase than with a lease.

Summary

Buying a car has been and will still be the most popular way to get behind the wheel of a new ride while Leasing is like renting a car for an extended period.

There is no easy answer to the question of whether it is better to buy or lease a new car. Each method has a share of limitations and advantages. Although monthly payments with a lease get lower, you do not automatically own the vehicle. Buying a car is naturally more expensive since you have to pay the entire purchase price for the vehicle and your payments end once you pay off the car loan and you rightly own the car.
