Car AC Smells Like Vinegar

Even though you are not likely to experience major car-related issues that often, they are bound to appear at one point. A leaky or overheating engine, faulty suspension, or a worn and torn car axle are all common problems for consumers. You never know when one may appear, and it’s better to come prepared with information and knowledge. 

Seeing as many like to drive around with the AC unit on, it can be pretty annoying when it starts to produce an unpleasant odor. This is a nightmare for those who live in hotter states, but the cause and solution are pretty simple.

How Does The AC Work?

Before we delve into the issue, let’s discuss how the AC works. The process is straightforward and heavily dependent on the refrigerant. It is a special fluid contained within the AC units that transitions from a low-pressure gas to a high-pressure liquid. 

Air conditioner components send the refrigerant outside, allowing it to absorb heat and humidity from the vehicle and produce cool, dry air. The substance changes states due to the system’s ability to control pressure and temperature. 

Why Does The Smell Appear?

Because using the conditioner involves taking air from the outside, it has a filter installed. When it’s brand new, it handles the job well. But after extensive usage and multiple miles driven, it may start to accumulate more and more pollen, pollutants, or even leaves that all get stuck on the filter. 

Due to all those things sticking onto it, mold or mildew will slowly grow. And these are the culprits behind the unpleasant smell. 

Other Symptoms Of A Faulty Conditioner

As the air conditioning system is relatively complex, it consists of many parts, all of which can succumb to wear and tear or be damaged otherwise. This, in turn, leads to various symptoms that appear depending on what breaks down. Even though it’s just the vinegary smell now, you may experience entirely new problems later down the track, which include:

• Leaks. Because your conditioner passes the refrigerant through tubes under pressure, everything needs to be sealed tightly. It’s normal for a small leak to occur, but if the amount gets significant, it’s a definite problem. 

• Faulty Compressor. At one point, you may notice that the conditioner doesn’t cool the air down. It is probably due to a defective compressor that needs replacing. 

• Multiple Other Parts. Last but not least are the various other parts of the AC. They’re numerous (compressor, evaporator, condenser, hoses, etc.), all of which disrupt the proper functioning of your AC. And although the symptoms are too many to name, you’re likely to notice that something is off anyways. 

Fixing The Air Conditioner

While getting rid of the smell is relatively simple and harmless, other possible problems could be more complex. The AC system is very intricate and consists of multiple parts, making the repairs pretty expensive. 

But if that’s just the vinegary smell, then your problem is nothing but a moldy air filter. All you have to do is just change it. Here, the most significant spend would be the labor cost, and you can quickly negate that by doing it yourself. A new filter will set you back just by $10-$20. 

However, if it’s a leak, things get complicated as there may be multiple components causing it. So, in conjunction with the hoses, you might have to replace the O-rings, which could also be the cause. A pack of the rings costs around $10. The labor cost ranges from $150 to $500, but the total sum could increase if more components need replacing. The same goes for a compressor, the only difference being its price, which is about $100-$200.

Summary

A moldy filter is not an expensive issue to fix. It involves just replacing the filter, which can be quickly done by anyone from the get-go. But, if the conditioner was used for quite some time, the overall costs increase proportionally to the number of worn and faulty components.

As such, repairing the AC unit may cost you thousands of dollars. The only possible solution is to look after your vehicle and stay on top of your maintenance. And even though these measures are preventative, they will delay or outright stop the problems from occurring.
