Chevrolet Aveo RS Show CarChevrolet added the Aveo subcompact in 2004 as its lowest-priced car. Based on a design by Korean automaker Daewoo, the Aveo is offered as a 4-door sedan or 5-door hatchback. Providing an early glimpse at the next-generation Aveo set to debut for the 2010 model year, the Chevrolet Aveo RS Show Car was introduced at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Aveo RS is designed to appeal to young enthusiasts by showcasing the new model's design, as well as the many personalization options that could be offered for the new production version.

The all-new Chevrolet Aveo, to be built in Michigan, will hit the streets for the 2011 model year, right around the same time the new compact and electric vehicle come to market. Along with the Malibu and Impala, Chevrolet will offer no fewer than five fuel-efficient sedan/hatchback models for the 2011 model year.

Chevrolet Aveo RS Show Car

Rather than espousing the efficiency of its next-generation Aveo subcompact, Chevrolet chose instead to focus on design when introducing the Aveo RS Show Car. Not that the new Aveo isn't an important part of GM's greater effort to meet future government-mandated fuel economy standards, because it absolutely is. But, as Michael Simcoe, executive director of North American Exterior Design at GM, states, "The Aveo RS Show Car demonstrates how progressive design can inject personality into a small car. We want customers to see it and have an emotional reaction to it."

Even at a glance, it is readily apparent that Chevrolet's target market for the Aveo RS Show Car is young enthusiasts, rather than budget-minded commuters or hard-core environmentalists. The exterior of the Aveo RS Show Car, finished in racy Boracay Blue paint (including the brake calipers), features a European-inspired look and includes such sporty design cues as low openings on the front fascia and a lower mouth trimmed in a combination of brushed and polished aluminum. Fog lamps are placed next to brake-cooling inlets that flow into the front fender flares, while exposed headlamps, inspired by the designers' affection for motorcycles, feature brushed aluminum along the surrounds. The sides and top of the car are characterized by uninterrupted body lines, a high beltline and low roofline. Rear door handles located in the C-pillar area give the Aveo RS Show Car the look of a 3-door, rather than a 5-door model. An integrated rear spoiler, center-mounted exhaust and chrome exhaust tips complete the sporty exterior treatment.

Both the motorcycle and the Boracay Blue themes continue on the inside. On the instrument panel, set within an asymmetrical LCD readout trimmed in milled metal with round cutouts, is a round, analog tachometer, similar to those found on street bikes. The side vents are also trimmed in aluminum. The interior is finished in matte black and highlighted by gloss black, metallic and blue accents. Boracay Blue accent stitching can be found across the dual cockpit instrument panel, front and rear door insert, steering wheel rim, gear shift boot, parking brake, leather seat bolster and floor mats. The car features a USB port for multi-media connectivity, as well as ice-blue backlighting on the audio display. The Aveo RS also features storage compartments in the center stack and doors, and the rear seats fold flat.

Chevrolet didn't release many details on the powertrain of the Aveo RS Show Car, except to say that the car is powered by the same engine that will be available in the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze-a 138-horsepower, 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. Mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the Aveo RS's engine delivers what Chevrolet promises is spirited performance. Wheels on the Aveo RS are 19 inches in diameter and feature a 5-spoke design, and a gunmetal metallic-finish Chevrolet logo is etched on each wheel.

For the show car, Chevrolet designers created a special engine cover in graphite silver with a brushed aluminum insert. The coolant and power steering fluid fill caps are rimmed in ice blue, and the honeycomb vents flanking the center of the cover are matte-finished in shadow chrome and designed to match the wheel color.
