Volvo’s first electric sedan—the 2026 Volvo ES90—has finally arrived, and it’s more of a lifted hatchback than what you might be used to from the Swedish automaker. Think of the new ES90’s body style as like the Toyota Crown. This new electric vehicle (EV) isn’t a Polestar either, and it’s the first Volvo to use 800-volt electric technology, joining the new EX90 SUV in the automaker’s expanding U.S. electric lineup.

Volvo currently sells four EV models in the United States, and the ES90 will serve as the electric counterpart to the gas-powered S90 sedan. The ES90 is now available to order in Europe, but we'll have to wait a little longer in the States. It will launch in the U.S. in 2026, with prices likely ranging from $70,000 to $80,000.

The ES90 has a slightly higher ride height and ground clearance than Volvo's SUVs—a trait American car shoppers look for in crossovers but not in the fading sedan market. It's also taller and heavier than the S90 sedan. Volvo will build the ES90 on its SPA2 electric platform, which the automaker says allows consistent updates across the brand's electric lineup.
Volvo's signature "Thor's Hammer" headlights make the ES90 look more modern than its gas-fed sibling, and there's a unique welcome and farewell lighting sequence. There are seven exterior colors and four wheel options—ranging from 20 to 22 inches—for buyers to customize their ES90.
The ES90's sizeable rear hatch provides nearly 26 cubic feet of cargo space when you fold all the seats. Plus, there's extra storage space in the frunk for the charging equipment. Overall, the ES90's design looks sharp and helps it stand out among Volvo's more traditionally styled EVs.

Volvo cars have some of the nicest interiors available, and the ES90's cabin appears to be among the brand's best. Its clean lines and minimal clutter give it the quintessential Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic. Compared to the gas-fed S90, its longer wheelbase provides ample passenger space. Six ambient lighting themes and various upholstery options allow for personalization. A panoramic sunroof comes standard on all ES90 sedans, and an optional electrochromic glass roof is available.

Both single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) ES90s are available. The single-motor variant has 329 hp; Volvo says it can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. Meanwhile, the AWD version offers 442 hp and, according to Volvo’s stopwatch, can reach 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. A Twin Motor Performance version boasts 670 hp, which the automaker claims can reach 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
As of this writing, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has yet to announce estimates for electric driving range. The 88-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack should provide single-motor models with over 300 miles of range.
Twin-motor cars upgrade to a larger 102-kWh battery that unlocks closer to 400 miles of range per charge. The larger pack is expected to charge from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes, which is relatively quick, on a 350-kW DC fast-charging station due to its 800-volt construction, which the automaker says is the first for an electric Volvo.

A dashboard-mounted, vertically oriented 14.5-inch touchscreen controls most interior functions and runs Google's built-in software. The 360-degree camera provides a new 3D view to assist with parking. There’s a smaller 9-inch display on the steering column, while the head-up display provides even more helpful information.
Volvo has some of the best sound systems I've ever experienced for jamming out on the way to the office, and the ES90 comes with a Bowers & Wilkins system with Dolby Atmos spatial audio on higher trim levels.
While its German competitors often overshadow Volvo, the Swedish automaker makes some of the nicest luxury sedans for driving in ultimate comfort. Things like design, comfort, and top-tier safety tech are top of mind for Volvo, providing an excellent alternative to the sportier rides and performance of cars from BMW and Porsche.
If you prefer performance and luxury features, EVs like the Porsche Taycan and Mercedes-Benz EQS have more power and should have an overall more engaging driving experience than the ES90. Their high-performance variants have significantly more power than the ES90 Twin Motor Performance, and their most efficient models also have more range than the ES90. Sometimes, it’s not all about the biggest numbers though, and Volvo makes the space you spend a good chunk of time in a great place to be.
If the ES90 is anything like Volvo's gas-powered sedans, it'll have no problem competing with the BMW i7, Lucid Air, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and Porsche Taycan.
