Following more substantial updates for the 2025 model year, the 2026 Nissan Frontier adds a new Dark Armor package, continuing the trend of adding a lot of dark and/or black trim to the exterior of a new vehicle. The Frontier also gains new standard features, off-road drive modes, and a new vibrant paint color: Citrus Strike. It is a neon lime/yellow color that also sounds pretty on-trend for 2026.

The new drive modes are the most significant functional upgrade for 2026. Although Nissan did not describe its selector or provide a photo, the drive modes are On-Road, Rock, Sand, Mud, and Hill Descent Control. As the names suggest, these modes are designed to maximize traction and control in specific off-road environments. They are standard on the SV and Pro-4X trim levels.
As for the new Dark Armor package, it is an exclusive option for the SV trim. It adds 17-inch black alloy wheels and darker finishes for the grille, mirror caps, exterior badging, and the tailgate’s prominent “FRONTIER” lettering. The interior also gets dark trim on the door handles, air vents, shifter trim, and dashboard.
There are also feature content enhancements for 2026. The S and SV trims now come standard with LED headlights, and the SV, Pro-X, and Pro-4X trims now include an eight-way power driver’s seat. The two Pro trims also gain standard heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start.
Thankfully, those looking to stay toasty in the winter will not have to pay more just to get the stay-warm items in the Pro trims. The SV’s new All-Weather package includes them, along with dual-zone automatic climate control.
The main reason to choose the Pro trims remains their unique off-road equipment, including Bilstein off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, and more aggressive styling, headlined by “Lava Red” tow hooks. Those new drive modes should further enhance its capability for 2026. It is still no Ford Ranger Raptor, but the Frontier’s 310-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 still has plenty of guts to get this truck going off- or on-road.

For even greater off-road capability, Roush Performance is now offering an exclusive Pro-4X R build featuring a 2-inch lift and off-road suspension with Ohlins components. It also adds a titanium-finished skid plate and grille, as well as Roush badging. All these parts are purchased and installed through Roush.

The Frontier is available in extended- and crew-cab body styles, with the latter offering short- and long-bed options. Only the Toyota Tacoma offers this level of variety. Beyond that, the Frontier is generally less competitive overall than the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Ford Ranger, and the Toyota Tacoma.
