Every popular body-on-frame midsize pickup truck model in America has been significantly redesigned within the last year, except for the 2025 Nissan Frontier. However, it’s not all that popular to begin with. Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, and Toyota have all adopted turbochargers and downsized, more efficient engines for their midsize truck offerings. At the same time, the Frontier soldiers on, powered by an ancient V6 engine but with increased towing ability for 2025 and other modern updates.
Unlike Ford and General Motors, which only offer their midsize trucks with 5-foot beds, Nissan, like Toyota, equips the Frontier with a 6-foot bed and longer wheelbase if customers want it. As of this writing, Nissan hasn't announced pricing for the 2025 Frontier, but the trucks will begin arriving at dealerships in late summer 2024.
Along with standard trim levels (S, SV, SL) in either rear- (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD), the 2025 Nissan Frontier is also available as a Pro-X or Pro-4X with all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a rear locking differential, 17-inch wheels, red recovery points, and black fenders.
Most of the Frontier's visual updates for 2025 come up front. The automaker updated the grille with more black trim and three thin vents above the Nissan badge. It looks especially aggressive on the Pro-X and Pro-4X trims, which have newly designed wheels and additional black trim across the tailgate. Buyers can order those two truck versions—with either RWD or 4WD—in the new Afterburn Orange color pictured here. The Frontier's bed can have a factory spray-in bedliner and a 120-volt power outlet.
Stepping inside the Frontier, a new 12.3-inch touchscreen on the SV grade and higher greets drivers and passengers. The system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. On Frontier Pro-4X, you can now use the Off-Road camera function at up to 12 mph on the trail. And we're happy to report that the Frontier finally has a telescopic adjustment on the steering wheel. The loaded Frontier SL has a leather interior, a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Fender 10-speaker sound system.
All 2025 Nissan Frontier pickups use a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 engine with 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and RWD or 4WD.
For the 2025 model year, Nissan squeezed more towing capacity out of the Frontier. Maximum towing capacity is now up to 7,150 pounds—still short of most rivals, but up nearly 500 pounds across all Frontier trims.
Nissan is slowly adding standard safety features to the Frontier. Now, the automaker includes lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear parking sensors, and adaptive cruise control in addition to the standard Safety Shield 360 package of advanced driver assistance systems.
The 2025 Nissan Frontier's updates make the midsize truck more appealing than it has been since its recent redesign, but it still trails its rivals in several key aspects. The Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, and Toyota Tacoma offer more refined engines, nicer cabins, modern tech, and more off-road capability than the Frontier. It's time for Nissan to catch up or run the same play it did with its full-size offering, the Titan.
