More than two decades ago, Porsche purists got the shock of a lifetime when the automaker revealed the Cayenne, a muscle-bound SUV with legitimate off-road capability. While there’s room for debate over whether the family hauler saved Porsche from bankruptcy, there’s no denying its appeal. A few years after the Cayenne’s splash landing, Porsche rolled out the Panamera sedan. Sporting a range of beefy powertrain options and a luxurious cabin, the Panamera has remained a solid enthusiast car and is heading into its third generation for the 2024 model year.

The new Panamera is available for order now and will continue into 2024 with the myriad of available configurations that Porsche has offered since the beginning. We’ll see a hybrid model later on, and buyers can choose from a range of gas powertrain options, including a twin-turbocharged V8 and a V6. The car will hit dealers’ lots in the spring of 2024, and the Turbo E-Hybrid model will get a separate announcement later.

Early Panamera models did not have the most elegant design, but Porsche has refined the car’s shape over the years, giving it sharper lines and a lower, wider look. Its exterior dimensions are close to the measurements the car carried before, at 198.9 inches long, 76.3 inches wide, and 56 inches tall. Porsche updated the front fascia with a new air intake above the license plate bracket and reshaped the side windows with flush edges on the rear window.

Beyond the load of new tech in the 2024 Panamera’s cabin, Porsche updated the interior with a redesigned center console that retains some physical controls but ditches the gearshift lever. The driver selects gears using controls located to the right of the steering wheel, and the Panamera has Porsche’s signature left of the ignition switch.
Porsche offers vast customization options for the 2024 Panamera’s cabin, as it has done in previous model years. Buyers can choose from several interior colors and materials, including many two-tone and contrasting color packages. There are various stitching options, almost 10 seat-related packages, and standalone options such as powered rear sunshades, an air filtration system, and a smoker’s package.
Porsche revised the Panamera’s powertrains for 2024, which, according to the automaker, makes them more powerful, responsive, and efficient. The Panamera and Panamera 4 available at launch come with a turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine, making a healthy 348 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque—improvements of 23 hp and 37 pound-feet. Porsche says the updated powertrain delivers a 5-second zero-to-60-mph time and a top speed of 169 mph in the rear-drive Panamera. According to Porsche, the all-wheel-drive (AWD) Panamera 4 scoots to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and tops out at 168 mph.
The Turbo E-Hybrid gets a reworked, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 and an electric motor that combine for 670 hp and 685 pound-feet of torque. Porsche integrated the electric motor with the transmission housing, saving more than 10 pounds and creating more efficient power delivery. According to the Porsche, the AWD E-Hybrid offers an impressive 3-second zero-to-60-mph time and a top speed of 195 mph.
Porsche updated the Panamera for 2024 with standard 2-chamber, 2-valve air suspension. The new car also gets Porsche Active Suspension Management, and Porsche Active Ride is available for the hybrid. It brings many suspension settings, and the automaker says it helps keep the car flat during cornering, acceleration, and hard braking.
The new Panamera gets more safety equipment and revised versions of the standard tech it had before. Porsche equips standard matrix LED headlights that shift their light beam for better visibility and to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. A speed-assistant function comes standard and can help the driver maintain the speed limit with alerts and feedback. The adaptive cruise control system has a new lane-keeping function and cross-road assistance. It also has a new automatic emergency steering function that can quickly maneuver away from obstacles and other vehicles.
Other standard tech includes traffic-sign recognition, active parking assistance, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.
As of this writing, Porsche hasn’t covered the new Panamera’s infotainment system in detail, so we don’t have measurements for the touchscreen or digital gauge cluster. The automaker does note a new available passenger display that measures 10.9 inches and other standard features, including wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate controls, and more.
Though passenger cars aren’t the powerhouse sales drivers they once were, the top echelon of luxury sedans is a surprisingly strong market. The Panamera competes against a range of expensive 4-door models, including the Audi A7, which features a similar size and shape but less performance and a slightly duller interior. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is likely the Panamera’s most potent rival, bringing a lovely interior and excellent performance. That said, it’s more expensive to start and less engaging to drive than the Panamera. Buyers may also look at the electric side of the segment, where the Lucid Air and Tesla Model S offer incredible performance and luxury.
