2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV Preview

Mercedes-Benz rolled out its first electric flagship—the EQS sedan—for the 2022 model year. Indeed, the EQS brought much of the vaunted S-Class plushness in a futuristic, all-electric package. Shortly after that, the German luxury automaker followed with the EQS SUV. It then introduced the EQE sedan, more closely aligned with the existing E-Class cars. Now, the automaker is again expanding its electric-vehicle (EV) lineup, this time with the EQE SUV—the fourth EV model in its catalog.

The new EQE SUV is shorter and has a shorter wheelbase than the EQE sedan, but Mercedes says it offers one of the most spacious interiors in its class. At the same time, it offers solid range and incredible tech. There's also a separate AMG model with more power and quicker acceleration.

Mercedes based the new EQE SUV on the EQE sedan, both of which share an architecture with other EQ vehicles. The SUV also shares aerodynamic bodywork, including a smooth underbody that helps reduce drag and a flat windshield. Mercedes fitted new wheel spoilers in front of the front axle that direct airflow to the wheels, offering aerodynamic wheel covers that can further reduce drag when the car is properly equipped.

In addition to building a slippery EV, Mercedes beefed up the seals around the exterior glass to reduce wind noise. According to Mercedes, the SUV's new A-pillar design helps improve visibility in adverse weather. Around the back, Mercedes integrated spoilers into the taillights, roof, and body sides.

The 5-seat EQE SUV comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery. Mercedes also uses the material on the dash and armrest. Mercedes offers five interior color combinations, including brown with grey and blue/black, while rose gold accents highlight the cabin's air vents and other trim. Mercedes says it deliberately used starkly contrasting materials to create an exciting design, so the SUV gets features like real wood trim nestled against real aluminum inside.

Though it's shorter than the EQE sedan and has a shorter wheelbase, the EQE SUV offers 39.4 inches of headroom up front and 39.3 in the back. There are 40.5 inches of legroom and 18.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. The area expands to 59 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.

Mercedes offers three configurations of the 2023 EQE SUV. The EQE 350+ gets a rear-axle-mounted 215-kW electric motor that delivers rear-wheel drive, 288 hp, and 417 pound-feet of torque. That output is good enough for a claimed 6.3-second zero-to-60-mph time.

The EQE 350 4Matic (AWD) gets dual motors, but the total output remains at 215 kW. As a result, horsepower remains at 288, but torque jumps to 564 pound-feet, lowering the zero-to-60-mph time by a tenth of a second.

At the top of the non-AMG EQE SUV range, the EQE 500 4Matic gets two motors with 300 kW total output. There are 536 hp and 633 pound-feet on tap, which, according to Mercedes, drops the zero-to-60-mph time to 4.6 seconds.

Mercedes hasn't elaborated on range numbers for the entire EQE SUV lineup but has said it will offer more than 342 miles using the WLTP standard in specific configurations. According to the automaker, using a home wall box, the EQE SUV can fully recharge in 9.5 hours. Additionally, it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 32 minutes using a 170-kW DC fast charger. Accompanying the 90.6-kWh battery is a heat pump system that takes waste heat from the drivetrain and battery to heat the vehicle's interior. Mercedes says that it reduces battery draw and improves range.

As with previous EQ models, Mercedes offers rear-axle steering for the EQE SUV. The rear wheels can turn up to 10 degrees, tightening the turning radius and improving maneuverability in tight spaces. An available adaptive air suspension can raise the vehicle by up to one inch.

Mercedes equips the EQE SUV with several driver aids as standard and offers several more in options packages. Automatic emergency brakingblind-spot warning, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assistance, LED headlights, and a surround-view camera system come standard. Mercedes offers a Driver Assistance package with active lane keeping and blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, and a Pre Safe system with side coverage. A head-up display is also available.

The 2023 EQE SUV comes standard with a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital configurable gauge cluster. The long list of other standard features includes wireless charging, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Burmester 3D sound system, and more. There's also a fingerprint sensor that offers access to up to seven saved driver profiles.

Mercedes updated its infotainment interface with what it calls zero-layer. According to the automaker, the system reduces the number of taps needed to accomplish a task or change a setting in the interface, making the system less distracting. The SUV also offers voice commands, so the driver can control various vehicle systems without removing their hands from the steering wheel.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV Competitors - Find the best Mercedes-Benz deals!

The number of luxury electric SUV models has expanded in recent times. The EQE SUV will compete against the new BMW iX, an upscale SUV with bold styling, great tech, and interesting powertrain features. The Audi E-tron SUV also brings an opulent interior and great tech but falls short on range compared to some rivals. Buyers may also consider the brand-new Cadillac Lyriq, which offers one of the brand's best interiors and striking exterior style. The Cadillac also rides on GM's Ultium platform and delivers up to 312 miles per charge.
