BMW is going electric, and the automaker has a line of impressive cars and SUVs to pique buyers’ interest. But the Bavarian automaker isn’t done with gas just yet. BMW will continue selling gas vehicles for some time, and it even has a brand-new gas SUV with extreme performance on the way. The XM is BMW’s sendoff to performance gas SUVs, and it features a unique plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain with incredible power and acceleration.
The XM also marks the introduction of a new sub-brand for BMW called Label Red. The vehicles possess more power, unique styling, and exclusive features that set them apart from standard XM models. Their price tag starts at $185,000, too, so they will be far more exclusive than a standard XM. BMW expects to begin production in late 2022 at its Spartanburg, South Carolina facility.
BMW has shown several renders and teasers for the XM, each outlining a sharply styled SUV with unique lines and geometric shapes. The automaker gave its new SUV an oversized grille, and the front end features new adaptive LED headlights that house the running lights, turn signals, and headlights. BMW hid sensors and cameras for advanced driver aids in the front fascia, and the SUV’s grille takes inspiration from other BMW M cars.
The sides feature high-gloss black window surrounds and gloss black accent badging. The SUV’s back window is nearly flat, and the rear end features laser-engraved BMW logos on the glass. BMW’s signature M dual-exhaust outlets are on display here, with a unique stacked design and special aerodynamic bodywork to help cool the exhaust.
BMW was going for a lounge feel with the XM’s cabin. The interior design features a full-size space for a middle passenger in the back, and BMW used Alcantara for accents throughout. Merino leather is available with Sakhir Orange highlights. The automaker offers interior color themes that pair with specific materials, such as the Silverstone and Deep Lagoon colors for SUVs equipped with Merino leather.
The XM is also available with Vintage Coffee Merino leather. The material endures a finishing process that highlights flaws and aging instead of hiding them. BMW says the leather in each XM will wear differently, giving it a unique look, and no two will age alike.
BMW equips the XM with a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 gas engine and an electric motor. The engine itself produces 483 hp and works with a 194-hp electric motor. Maximum horsepower lands at 644, and torque reaches 590 pound-feet. Power hits all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Though this is an SUV, it’s an M-powered SUV, and BMW says its engine will end up in its IMSA race car for 2023.
According to BMW, the fifth-generation electric motor uses pre-gearing to increase maximum torque. The automaker says the system allows a smaller transmission housing-mounted motor to provide max power. BMW says the motor and gas powertrain combine to deliver a zero-to-60-mph time of just 4.1 seconds. The BMW XM Label Red will be available in early 2023 with up to 735 hp and 735 pound-feet of torque.
As a plug-in hybrid, the XM delivers up to 30 miles of all-electric range. According to BMW, the system uses predictive heat management to speed charging and improve efficiency, and it’s capable of AC charging at up to 7.4 kW. BMW promises a zero-to-100-percent charge in 3.25 hours and says the hybrid system provides power for the vehicle’s 12-volt electronics.
Finally, this wouldn’t be BMW if we weren’t discussing synthetic engine sounds. The XM will get BMW IconicSounds Electric, a system that provides unique sound for different vehicle functions, including startup and acceleration.

Available tech comes in the Driving Assistant Professional package, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, and more. BMW says the system works together to provide semi-automated driving on select roads.
The XM comes with a large, curved touchscreen and digital gauge cluster powered by the latest BMW iDrive 8 infotainment system. It offers XM-specific features with progressive shift lights in the cluster, a digital scale, and detailed vehicle performance metrics. The SUV’s ambient interior lighting changes colors with select drive modes, and BMW says the lights flash to alert the driver to incoming calls and notifications. The XM also comes with electric display modes that allow the driver to view the current state of charge, battery and electric system output, and more. A head-up display is also standard and provides M-specific vehicle information alongside speed and other data.
The BMW XM’s price tag and performance put it in rarified air in the world of super SUVs. It will face off against the Lamborghini Urus, which embodies the automaker’s excess and madness. The mechanically similar Audi RS Q8 is another good cross-shop opportunity. The Urus and RS Q8 are full-fat V8 SUVs and do not offer the innovative range and power that the BMW’s powertrain will. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 also brings ultimate off-road capability on top of its flat-out speed and power.
