Lincoln’s flagship model is the Navigator full-size SUV. Last redesigned for the 2018 model year, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator gets a nip, tuck, and fresh technology to ensure its competitiveness against its primary rivals from Cadillac, GMC, Infiniti, and Jeep.
Standard, Reserve, and Black Label trim levels continue, and the 2022 Navigator remains available in standard- and extended-length body styles. As was true before, the Navigator has a twin-turbocharged V6 engine and a choice between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive (AWD). Changes for the new model year mainly pertain to styling, comfort, and technology.
Though the Navigator did not lead Lincoln’s latest design renaissance, it is nevertheless the boldest expression of the automaker’s distinctive look due to its sheer size.
For 2022, the Navigator’s signature grille design gets an update, extended deeply into the bumper and recalling early versions of the Audi Singleframe grille design. New adaptive pixel projector headlights flank the grille. Around back, redesigned 3D-effect taillights and a modified bumper update the Navigator’s appearance, making it look more like the automaker’s Aviator model.
Based on Lincoln’s images, it appears the aluminum wheel designs are different, too, though they employ familiar themes. Starlight Gray is a new paint color, while the Navigator Black Label offers an exclusive new Manhattan Green Metallic hue.
Inside, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator adds new Constellation-themed infotainment, digital instrumentation, and head-up displays. Inspired by twilight skies, they fade from a warm orange at the bottom to a deep blue with stars at the top.
Lincoln says the Navigator’s optional 30-way Perfect Position front seats feature an upgraded massage function, but it’s the second-row occupants who enjoy a significant boost in terms of comfort. Heating and ventilation are now standard in this row of seats, with massage a new option. Lincoln also offers a new 5.8-inch digital control display for these occupants to control their own climate and audio settings.
Two new Black Label themes debut for 2022: Central Park and Invitation. They join Chalet and Yacht Club, which Lincoln carries over from the previous year.
Lincoln says New York City’s Central Park inspired the 2022 Navigator Black Label sharing the same name. Serving as a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, this Navigator features perforations in its premium leather that mimic the New York City skyline, while laser-etched mapping of the park’s trails is evident in the dashboard’s open-pore dark walnut wood. Lincoln paints the Black Label Central Park in Manhattan Green with an Urban Green interior.
Crafted to spark the warm and welcoming feel of a small gathering with good friends, the Black Label Invitation features an industry-first dual laser-etching process applied to its exclusive open-pore Khaya wood trim. Outdoor pergolas inspire the perforations in the premium black leather, which features Brandy-colored stitching. New Chroma Caviar paint decorates the Invitation’s exterior.
Lincoln continues to use a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine in the 2022 Navigator and reports that it now makes 440 horsepower at 5,850 rpm compared to 450 hp at 5,500 rpm in 2021. Torque output remains unchanged, measuring 510 pound-feet at 3,000 rpm. Lincoln declined to explain why the engine is retuned but says performance is unchanged.
A 10-speed automatic transmission delivers the power to the rear wheels unless you specify the available AWD system. The Navigator continues to use a 4-wheel-independent suspension that helps it to provide comfortable third-row seating accommodations and lots of luggage space. Both the Cadillac Escalade and Jeep Grand Wagoneer are now using this type of suspension for similar comfort and utility benefits.
The 2022 Navigator is available with a new adaptive suspension with Road Preview technology to improve ride quality. It reads the road 500 times per second and can make up to 100 adjustments per second, helping to reduce impact harshness. This technology should be especially beneficial in Navigators fitted with larger wheels.
Lincoln adds a post-collision braking system to the new Navigator. This technology is designed to halt the SUV as soon as possible following a collision to reduce the chances of secondary collisions after an initial impact. Secondary collisions are dangerous because the airbags inflate during the first impact but are no longer protective after a few seconds.
Lincoln also upgrades the 2022 Navigator to its Co-Pilot360 2.0 collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). This further enhances the Co-Pilot360 Plus technology Lincoln has offered in its other SUVs and is standard for all new Navigators. An Intersection Assist function is new, automatically applying the brakes if the Navigator’s driver attempts to make an unsafe left turn across traffic.
Additionally, Active Park Assist 2.0 is standard on the 2022 Navigator. It can take complete control of parking the Navigator in parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. It also offers a Park Out Assist function with side-sensing capability to help drivers maneuver the large SUV in tight quarters.
The bigger news on the ADAS front is the Navigator’s optional ActiveGlide Level 2+ hands-free highway driving technology. ActiveGlide is similar to the Super Cruise technology Cadillac offers in the Escalade and a hands-free Active Driving Assist feature coming soon to the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
Lincoln ActiveGlide operates only on certain approved limited-access divided highways and under specific conditions. It takes control of the steering while the Navigator’s adaptive cruise control manages vehicle speed and following distance to traffic ahead. A driver-monitoring camera ensures that you’re paying attention at all times and ready to take control if necessary.
If you plan to tow a trailer, the 2022 Navigator’s new Trailer Reverse Guidance technology will come in handy. It works with the Pro-Trailer Backup Assist system to make this task more effortless than ever.
In addition to new safety systems, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator upgrades to next-generation Sync 4 infotainment with twice the computing power and a larger 13.2-inch touchscreen display. Highlights of this technology include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an Amazon Alexa Built-in digital assistant, Lincoln Enhance over-the-air software update capability, and natural voice recognition.
An improved Revel Ultima 3D high-end audio system is now available for the Navigator, bringing a total of 28 speakers to the SUV’s interior, including eight mounted within the headliner. Six new chimes recorded by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra supplant traditional warnings and alerts for a more soothing experience.
An upgraded Lincoln Play rear-seat entertainment system features dual 10.1-inch touchscreen displays and new Amazon Fire TV for Auto technology. This entertainment solution provides access to movies, TV shows, games, music, and more. Each rear display supplies 16GB of storage space, enabling viewers to enjoy Amazon Prime Video programming without active connectivity. Users can mirror the screens or watch different programming. The system is Alexa compatible and supports HDMI, USB Type C, and SD card formats.
Lincoln has three primary rivals within the premium and luxury full-size SUV space, and all three use an independent rear suspension design, which used to be the Navigator’s ace up its air intake.
Redesigned just last year, the Cadillac Escalade is the Navigator’s main competitor, but the new 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is about to go on sale and promises to take a bite out of both segment sales leaders. Bargain hunters aren’t shy about choosing the GMC Yukon Denali, either, which isn’t as luxurious but still captures customers seeking a large, upscale SUV.
In the face of increasingly stiff competition, Lincoln remains focused on delivering rolling sanctuaries of calm and quiet. Add the company’s ownership perks and exclusive Black Label services, and it’s clear Lincoln understands luxury.
