Taking another step forward into a new era of electrification and connectivity, Jaguar Land Rover has opened a facility to test the brand’s next generation of vehicles for electrical and radio interference.
The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) laboratory, located at the Gaydon facility in the UK, will ensure that future vehicles meet current and future legislation and quality standards as it pertains to electronics and connectivity. Launched back in May, the new Range Rover Sport was the first vehicle to undergo a bespoke testing program at the Gaydon in-house facility.

EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) is the ability of electrical equipment and systems to function in their electromagnetic environment properly, a critical aspect of vehicle performance. EMC limits the unintentional generation, reception, and propagation of electromagnetic energy in order to reduce the risk of undesired effects, like electromagnetic interference.
Jaguar Land Rover’s EMC lab features two anechoic chambers. These vessels contain an electrically ‘quiet’ rolling road that enables engineers to test vehicles at speed and the necessary equipment to assess the performance of individual components, including batteries or electric motors. Other features will also be tested for EMC, including GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, 4G, 5G, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring.

EMC testing is pivotal in delivering quality, legal compliance, and customer satisfaction within an industry set to increase the number of electric powertrains on vehicles, including digital and cloud-based services. This new testing facility demonstrates Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to providing drivers with the most advanced technology and in-vehicle connectivity.
