Jeep’s lineup is expanding with new models, but the automaker hasn’t forgotten its existing vehicles. The Jeep Renegade subcompact off-roader has been in production more or less unchanged since 2015, though Jeep let fly with a facelift in 2019.
The Fiat 500-based Jeep Renegade gets a handful of improvements for the 2022 model year. Updates are subtle but bring quality-of-life and tech benefits to the crossover SUV. A new Altitude package brings gloss black exterior badging and trim, 18-inch wheels, and deluxe upholstery in either cloth or leather. The base Sport and Latitude trim levels now come standard with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and navigation, and the top Limited trim gets 18-inch wheels, a new grille, fog lights, and a new rear valance.
Previous Renegades came with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, but Jeep has shifted the standard powertrain to a turbocharged 1.3-liter inline-4 that produces 177 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. All but the Sport trim come standard with 4-wheel drive (4WD), and a 9-speed automatic transmission is standard for all. Most trims come with active grille shutters to improve fuel economy.
The tiny off-roader brings legitimate capabilities with Jeep’s low-range gearing, which provides a 21:1 crawl ratio. A healthy 8.7 inches of ground clearance makes it easy to traverse rough terrain, and a towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds is enough for a small boat or trailer. Jeep says that the Trailhawk trim can ford up to 19 inches of water. Four-wheel-drive Renegades come with a rear axle that can be disconnected to improve fuel economy when 4WD is unnecessary.
Jeep says that the Renegade offers either as standard or optionally available more than 70 safety features. Lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, forward-collision warning, hill-descent control, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera are all standard. Two new features to the Renegade—advanced forward-collision warning and advanced lane-departure warning—are firsts for its segment as well, the automaker says.
Jeep hasn’t communicated a release date yet, but the 2022 Renegade SUV should hit dealers’ lots in late 2021. Pricing for the 2022 Renegade will start just shy of $25,000 and range to almost $32,000.
