2022 Acura NSX Type S Closes Supercar’s Run

Acura is dropping the NSX hybrid supercar from its lineup after the 2022 model year. The automaker will make the final 350 examples memorable, though. Each will wear a Type S designation and will offer more power and performance than any street-legal NSX to come before it. The 2022 Acura NSX Type S debuts on August 12, 2021, as a part of the annual Monterey Car Week festivities in California.

Acura will release full NSX Type S specifications at that time. For now, the company promises “quicker acceleration, sharper handling, and a more emotional driving experience.” Of the 350 examples Acura will build at its Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, 300 cars will be available to U.S. customers. Just 50 NSX Type S models will ship overseas.

When production of the second-generation NSX wraps up, Acura will have sold just over 2,000 examples of the car over a 7-year run. Brilliant to drive and practical enough to use every day, the NSX served as an engineering testbed, motorsports champion, and halo model for Acura and its parent company Honda.

Jon Ikeda, Vice President and Acura Brand Officer, suggests the discontinuation of the NSX isn’t the end of the line for electrified sports cars from the company. “Acura is a performance brand, a company of enthusiasts, and we will continue moving forward, actively investigating what the next generation of sports cars should be in an electrified era.” 

First, however, Acura will launch an electric SUV. Due in 2024, the EV will rely heavily on General Motors Ultium technology. Honda has already announced the name of its version: Prologue. However, by the end of this decade, Honda and Acura will switch to their own in-house e:Architecture EV platform.

By 2040, according to the automakers’ plans, the Honda and Acura lineups will be fully electric.
