2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Changes Include Special Edition, More Safety, Extra Cargo Space

Liz Kim | Jun 02, 2020

Hatchbacks are special. In a world gone crazy for crossover SUVs (which are just hatchbacks that sit higher off of the ground), they supply greater utility and cargo space than sedans while delivering better fuel economy and driving dynamics at a lower price than a typical SUV

Toyota, perhaps recognizing how special hatchbacks are, celebrates this with the new 2021 Corolla Hatchback Special Edition.

Based on the standard SE trim level, the new Corolla Hatchback Special Edition includes a front splitter, lower bodyside skirts, a black rear spoiler, and black 18-inch alloy wheels. It comes painted in an exclusive Supersonic Red paint color and includes a continuously variable transmission. Toyota will produce only 1,500 units, each equipped with special badges.

Additional changes to the 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback include standard side-impact airbags for the rear seat passengers, bringing the total airbag count to 10. The automaker also makes a rear cross-traffic warning system an option for the SE and standard equipment for the XSE. This feature was previously unavailable for the Corolla Hatchback.

Toyota also expands availability of its no-cost Enhanced Cargo Space option to include all trim levels except for the SE Nightshade. This option replaces the spare tire with a tire repair kit, in turn dropping the cargo floor and giving you an additional 6 cu.-ft. of luggage space behind the rear seats, for a total of 23 cu.-ft. Previously, this option was offered only with SE trim.

Finally, new colors debut for 2021, including Magnetic Gray Metallic and Wind Chill Pearl. Each is available in a 2-tone treatment with a black roof.

These changes for the 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback bring the trim level count to four: SE, SE Nightshade Edition, Special Edition, and XSE. All have a 168-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, and a 6-speed manual gearbox is available for the SE and XSE trim levels. Toyota’s innovative Dynamic Shift CVT is an option for the SE and XSE, and standard for the Nightshade and Special Edition.

All Corolla Hatchbacks are front-wheel drive, and they all include two years or 25,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
