How Much Should I Tip A Tow Truck Driver?

Dustin Hawley | Mar 06, 2023

Leaving some money for the servers to show appreciation is commonplace if you’ve ever been to a nice restaurant and had a great time. While not strictly obligatory, it helps the waiters feel gratification and improve their day.

How Much Should I Tip A Tow Truck Driver

The same rules apply to any kind of service you receive, especially if the person in question is a truck driver and helped you out considerably. But seeing as you are not likely to call for tow services that often, you may need to figure out how much money you should tip, and this article got you completely covered here.

When Should I Tip The Driver?

As said previously, you should tip the tow driver for a job well done to show your appreciation and to thank them for helping you out. That’s doubly true if they arrived at the location quickly and safely got your vehicle off the road. Plus, you may require them to provide extra services beyond towing, which certainly implies a reward.

Tipping is a personal choice. And while it’s not precisely an enforceable rule, many people working in the towing industry would appreciate any additional contribution. So, If you feel that your driver went above and beyond, offer them a tip at the end of their service.

Laws Regarding Tipping Tow Truck Drivers

Before you offer any money, it's best to check whether or not this is acceptable in your state of residence. You should give tips only when you feel like the service exceeds expectations, but if a tow truck driver is not allowed to accept them, offering one could be considered bribery.

If you live in an area where it is illegal for anyone other than law enforcement officials and taxi drivers to receive cash rewards as tips, don't expect the tow truck operator to appreciate your generosity.

How Much Money Should I Tip?

A good rule of thumb would be between 15% and 20% for services like getting your car towed and bringing it back. You should tip more if you receive extra services like towing a car in the mud, a free mechanic ride, or a bill discount. The same goes for tow truck operators who provide roadside assistance in addition to just getting your car moved, like helping you install new brakes. In such situations, giving about a 25% tip doesn't hurt.

Generally, you should tip around $5-$25, depending on how helpful they are. In some cases, however, their services could cost you around $120, which is quite a hefty sum, and that’s why certain people never tip in these cases.

Are There Any Other Options Here?

What if you don’t have any cash on hand to tip? Does it mean you can’t show appreciation for the services of the tow truck driver? Not really, as even here, you still have options.

A simple thank you for their service would go a long way. You can go on further and explain that you have no cash on hand and that you would have tipped them. They’ll understand because it’s normal not to have cash.

You can also do other things for them besides giving them cash. Do you have gift cards or coupons on hand? Why not pass that on to them? They’ll appreciate it. The tow truck driver would also appreciate it if you left them a positive review online. Who doesn’t like positive feedback from customers? Be sure to give them those five stars, and perhaps write a short text on the services provided.

Summary

Tipping tow truck drivers is a way to show your appreciation and help them out. Towing cars is not a very high-salary job, and even though you may pay a hefty sum for their services, only some of the money goes directly into the driver's pocket.

So, just as with servers, it’s a good idea to leave a big tip to tow truck drivers if they went above and beyond for you. But even if they didn’t, you’d still make their day better by offering some money. However, be aware that some states consider this form of compensation bribery, and it’s best to ask first before handing out the additional reward.
