2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Blends Sport, Utility

Christian Wardlaw | Jun 09, 2021

BMW has fully fleshed out its redesigned 4 Series lineup. It comes in coupe, convertible, and 5-door sportback (Gran Coupe) styles, and the new 2022 BMW i4 is essentially an electric 4 Series Gran Coupe. The last member of the family to debut is the gasoline-fueled 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The Gran Coupe grows substantially over the previous-generation model. It is nearly half a foot longer, more than two inches taller, and an inch broader, with wider front and rear tracks. The standard power-operated rear hatch opens to reveal a 12 cubic foot trunk, which must be some kind of a typo because the whole point of the car is to provide more utility than a 3 Series sedan (which holds 13 cubic feet of luggage). Fold the back seat down, and the 4 Series Gran Coupe’s capacity grows considerably.

The 430i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder making 255 horsepower, while the sport-tuned M440i supplies 382 horsepower courtesy of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical system and motor/generator.

An 8-speed sport automatic with paddle shifters powers the rear or all four wheels, and in the latter situation, the car uses BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Various M Sport upgrades enhance the car’s overall performance.

BMW offers the latest iDrive 7 infotainment, Live Cockpit Professional instrumentation, and advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) in the new 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe. With the optional Driving Assistant Professional package, the car provides Level 2 hands-on driving assistance with adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, and lane-change assistance.

With the latest iDrive technology, users can operate the system using a touchscreen, controls on the center console or steering wheel, natural voice recognition, and available gesture control. With gesture control, twirl a finger in the air in front of the display, and you can adjust the volume, for example.

Wireless smartphone integration, cloud-based navigation, Amazon Alexa, and remote access via smartphone app stand ready to satiate the tech-geek in all of us, and BMW can improve iDrive 7 over time via over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Apple iPhone users can turn their smartphone into a digital key that uses near field communications to unlock, start, drive the car, and lock it again upon reaching a destination.

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe release date is August of 2021, and prices start at $44,800 plus a destination charge of $995.
