If you have been waiting for Ram to build a diesel-powered version of the Power Wagon, your patience has paid off. During the second half of 2026, the new 2027 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Power Wagon will be available with the truckmaker's stout 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine, nearly doubling the towing and payload capacities. And all it will cost is $88,470, including the destination charge.

For the 2026 model year, the only engine available for a Ram Power Wagon is a 6.4-liter V8 generating 405 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. The maximum towing capacity is 10,590 pounds, and the maximum payload rating is 1,690 pounds.
When equipped with the Cummins turbodiesel option, the 2027 Ram Power Wagon is substantially more capable. Horsepower rises a bit to 430, but torque is the story with this engine, measuring 1,075 pound-feet at a low 1,800 rpm. Ram has not finalized the exact towing and payload ratings, but it promises close to 20,000 pounds of towing capacity and nearly 3,000 pounds of payload capacity.
The federal government does not rate heavy duty pickup trucks for fuel economy. However, Ram provides a clue about what you might expect under optimal highway-driving conditions. The company says the Power Wagon offers an estimated 600-mile range thanks to its 31-gallon fuel tank, which translates to 19.3 mpg.
Given the Power Wagon's newfound towing and hauling capabilities, Ram will offer a new fifth-wheel/gooseneck trailer preparation kit for the truck. Additionally, it is available with a load-leveling rear air suspension for the first time, which allows you to lower the rear end for easier trailer hook-up.
Two trailering technology option packages are available. The Towing Technology Group includes:
Separately, the Tow Technology Plus Group adds:

The Power Wagon's primary off-road-oriented rivals include the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD ZR2 equipped with the optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 and the Ford F-250 Super Duty XLT Tremor upgraded with the 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8. The Chevy and Ford preceded the Ram, making the Power Wagon late to the diesel-fueled, off-road heavy duty pickup truck party.
Compared to the 2026 model-year ZR2 and Tremor, the 2027 Power Wagon's Cummins turbodiesel produces less horsepower. Torque lands between the Silverado (975 pound-feet) and the F-250 (1,200 pound-feet). If Ram's final towing capacity cannot beat the Tremor's gooseneck rating of 19,900 pounds when equipped with the high-output Power Stroke, the Power Wagon will also land mid-pack in this regard. (The ZR2's maximum tow rating is 18,500 pounds.)
Undoubtedly, the new 2027 Ram 2500 HD Power Wagon's diesel engine option is a cause for celebration, especially if you are a Ram loyalist. Paired with this model's legendary off-roading capability, I would say you can expect to see a lot more Power Wagons on the road, all equipped with Cummins Turbodiesel badges on the front fenders.
